wow. My 6th gen runs at 170 down the road, when it's below 90, can drop a littl emore if it's cold. Stop and go traffic will see 225 when the fan kicks on. Cools back down to 210 - 215 or so. What you are saying is way warm for what I have ever seen on my 06.

I live in the Mojave Desert... a section called Las Vegas. The temps I quoted were summer operating temps where it cools down to about 100 degrees even at night. In winter months when we have 40 degree temps it runs much cooler, but I really don't pay attention to the temps then because I don't worry about.

PA firefighter, thats not right on your 5th gen. Mine runs at 170 anywhere above 50 mph and has never gotten hotter than 224 sitting in traffic when the weather was in the upper 80's. The fan kicks on and drops the temp back down to about 215. Make sure there are no leaves/sticks/furry woodland creatures caught in the radiator fan and that it kicks on around 224 when it is supposed to. Also, when was the last time the coolant was changed? Is the thermostat functioning?

My fan kicks in right around 224 as well. Typically it cools back down quick, but the two times I have mentioned (Vermont and in Philly traffic that one day) it got near 250*. It's never been at that range at any other point. I have not changed the coolant or t-stat since I purchased the bike in March of last year.

FWIW: I was riding last night, it was about 39* and my bike was running at 167*.

Ok, your t-stat is good. In weather like that mine ranges from 166-170 generally. When the t-stat in mine was bad it would run at like 135-140 during that kind of weather. Anyways, If you don't know the last time the coolant was changed, its time. The drain plug is on the water pump housing, get to it.
