Alright so my VFR has a coolant leak and I took the fairings off to see where the source was. That's another issue. Question is, how do I get to the air filter? I searched here and google and didn't come up with much. I figure I might as well do an oil change and an air filter change to have this thing ready for spring.

I also got a recall notice in the mail just yesterday for the wiring harness too. Nice!

If it's like the 3rd and 4th gen, you probably have to remove the fuel tank. One fuel line (shut the fuel off), one electrical connector, and one bolt at the rear. Slide backward an inch and lift straight up.

But, more importantly, how's Worland these days? Hoping to ride through there this spring to Yellowstone.

raise tank and remove the screws from the top of the air box, then remove the top.

Ah Worland is pretty boring and cold these days. Hopefully we get some warmer weather soon.

Thanks for the reply 02 VFR rider, seems like it will be pretty easy I hope.

There are a few hoses that you'll need to remember where they go
But not too big a deal

What is the lifespan of the OEM filter? I have 7K on my bike right now. Just want to make sure I am not changing it when it doesn't need changing.

bikebandit has the OEM listed at $51.50 :tsk:

I have K&N in my 3rd gen. Obviously your driving conditions drastically affect the life of the filter. I clean and reuse my K&N with every oil change. Some times it's dirtier than others. After 7000 miles, I'd be surprised if you weren't starting to show a good amount of dirt built up. In these western states, we probably have a lot more airborne dust than other wetter, less windy, climates.

I think the replacement interval for the air filter that honda gives is 12 thousand miles. When i picked up my 99 with just under 13k on it, I found the filter to be pretty dirty (not clogged or anything crazy) and ready to be changed.

02 nailed it on the head for the changin instructions. +1 here for K&N filters. I have one in my 6th gen. I would reccomend ANY re-usable air filter for every vehicle really, saves bucks big time unless you flip over vehicles like kleenex.

Thank you all for your help. I ended up purchasing a BMC filter and am downloading the service manual now and will tackle this tomorrow.

I read a lengthy website article on oil filters that seemed to be deeply researched (ended up recommending Purolator Pure 1 filters among others) and elsewhere on the same site he commented that air filters were pretty much all the same.

The site is on my other PC - I'll have to see if I can find it.

I would very much like to see this research, sounds like a great resource for the site. I must strongly disagree with the air filter thing though, the same principles that apply to an oil filter also apply to an air filter such as: ammount of materiel, number of pleats, type of materiel and what size particulates it allows through. Not bashing, just sayin, please post up the research when you find it.

My main point with the re-usable air filters is that if you plan on keeping a vehicle for any length of time, you will quickly overrun the cost of a good re-useable paying for multiple cheap toss out paper units. Not all of them will flow that much better than a paper one, in fact, most flow about the same as new paper filter because they are designed to catch smaller particulates but most have a larger total surface area by using more pleats.

Don't worry about the bashing, I got a thick e-skin. Good point on life of ownership on the air filters. I'll have to do the math when filter replacement comes up, which may be soon.

Here's what I got on the oil and filter thing.

    Motorcycle Oil and Filters

Motorcycle Oil Filters & Air Filters

At the very bottom of the first page is this link on air filters:

    ROGUE RC51 Airfilter questions page

I won't vouch for the validity of the information in either site. I thought I found this link here somewhere.

    Thanks for the feedback.

The BMC is a good call, as is a K&N. There may not be much in the way of a performance gain, but the ability to remove and clean as often as necessary, without spending $50 a pop, is priceless. Honda's every 12k replacement schedule is arbitrary at best. After just 4K miles during a dry and dusty Colorado July, my K&N required a thorough cleaning. Without one of these two filters, I could potentially spend $100-$150 a year on disposables; regardless of mileage.
