Bike Cam

Hi guys, I Have been looking around but I can seem to make up my mind on which type of camera/camcorder to get. I was hoping you guys could shed some light on the subject for me, on which types you like and use. The three that I like so far are the contour hd, go pro, and the P.O.V. I wont be using the cam all the time to post video's or anything, it will just be mostly for my enjoyment and friends. Is there any other brands that are just as good, or am I headed the right direction.

Oh man there are so many cool ones now, and HD too. There's one at Best buy that's a nice one, only forgot the name of it, (DOH!) if I was going to get another set up I'd go that way, mine in todays market is Old school, even though it's only 4 years old.

 

Costco recently had one, don't know if they still do. If you are going to use if for trips and stuff, one of the cycle mags just reviewed one that stores GPS information so that even when you get old, you will know where that road was. Kinda of a neat feature.

 

I just bought the GoPro Hero HD and am overall pretty happy with the purchase for $230. It came with lots of mounting options and includes several protective cases. I wish I had known about the Tachyon HD camera before I made my decision because it is cheaper and I think having a remote would have been a much better option than manually starting and stopping my Hero which is mounted to my front fender. The Tachyon also got decent reviews on Amazon. The only bad thing about the Tachyon seems to be lack of available mounting options where the GoPro Hero has many.

You can get a Back Pack for the GoPro HD now, too, a monitor that attaches to the back of the camera so you can see what you're recording while you're recording it. Can also play back and watch right on the camera.

 

Does the Go Pro have an external mic output, It seems that the one big downfall to the helmet cams is the wind noise. I know there are several ways to prevent wind noise for example an external mic, or a separate audio device. I would rather get a device that I didn't have to worry about syncing the audio. I am very computer literate so it wouldn't take me long to learn the software, I would just rather not mess with it though. As for the tachyon I liked it because it reminded me of the contour HD in many ways, and the price was nice. I think I can get a contour HD for $165 from a friend of mine that works in a bike shop, I just dont like the fact that there is no external mic on it.

 

There doesn't appear to be an external mic port on the GoPro camera but the wind noise is greatly reduced since the camera itself sits inside the clear plastic protective casing which shields most of the wind.

Yeah I bought the lcd backpack at the same time I bought the camera. It is pretty cool but honestly feel it should be included standard. It works as intended but is not really necessary in my opinion since most of my viewing is done on my netbook computer and most still pics taken with a dedicated camera.

+1 on Go Pro Hero HD, I took the camera on my Cozumel trip and film under water it's work but the image not as good as on land. For the price I am a happy camper

Home-made Camera Mount

Hey guys, I know the professional solution could be best but I made my own system... I hope it gives you ideas.

I own a 2008 VFR800A, and I am in Jordan so dealing with a blacksmith is easy and cheap. I used an old professional camera stand that I no longer use (no breaking or modding, just unscrewing and removing legs), and with little help from a guy who makes metal railing and stuff...

I managed to make a nice, adjustable, strong, very stable camera stand, and works with any normal camera that fits a standard camera stand. The stand is fixed to the fuel tank in two areas: fuel cap by replacing two screws with longer ones, and the same screws on the front of the tank fixing it to the bike chassis (sorry for any false terminology).

It cost me the camera stand which I can remove off the bike and assemble it again and JD 15 (USD 21), the cheapest HD camera I could find here (Sanyo Xacti HD 720p Video Camera with standard stabilizing feature) and one hour.
Check the pictures in my photo gallery to get a better understanding, I don't know how to put pictures here... still new
