Changing your oil and filter is easy.  You didn't say what year yours was, but on my '98 its as simple as pulling the left side lower fairing, removing the drain plug, changing the oil filter, replacing the plug, replacing the fairing, and filling it back up with oil (watch the sight glass while the bike is on the centerstand).

Look in the owner's manual for details.  It's usually kept under the seat of the bike.  If you bought yours used and it didn't come with one, get one.  Lots of valuable information in there like torque values, tire pressures and other general maintenance specs.

If you really want to get serious about it you can also get the field service manual.  Tells you how to do everything from a simple valve adjustment to tearing down and re-building the entire engine.

    On my 2005, I did:

    1) Use center kickstand
    2) Remove Left Side Fairing
    3) Remove front center plastic cover.. (black) Not sure what you called it.. lol
    4) Release the used old
    5) change the oild filter. You will need to remove it from the Left side, now that the fairing is not in the way.

It's really straight foward.. but not as easy as the F4i I had. I didn't have to remove any fairing to remove a filter.

I have an '03 VFR and changing the oil is quite easy. The only pain is removing the clips to take off the fairing. Keep a couple extra on hand to replace, if necessary.

    2004 Change oil

I just changed my oil last weekend, the clips are a pain in the neck. the way I did it has to be the easiest.

    1) remove the 2 clips on the belly of the bike that joins the Left / Right fairing together
    2) remove the SCREWS ONLY from the center fairing - 4 screws
    3) remove the Screws from the left side fairing

The fairing will not come off but you will have enough room to remove the oil filter however, you will have to buy a special oil filter wrench (autozone $3-$5).

    You can do it...

I probably will need to change the oil, since the previous owner has hardly riden the bike for over a year. But since I hate replacing the oilfilter without the proper tools (I try to prevent fastening anything without a torque wrench), does it make sense to only replace the oil for this time and replace the oilfilter at the next oil-change?

Make sure you always replace crush washer under drain bolt, it needs it every change. Some dealers skimp on this practice, pathetic and lazy I know.

I always keep a bunch of the washers and oil filters on hand, no matter the bike.

Also make sure bike is cold, hot pipes/engine hurt!

Really? I've never done this on any vehicle I've ever owned, to no ill effect.

Just to let everyone know that the Toyota Camry oil filter socket works wonderfully on the 2000 model. I happened to have it since I have a Camry so it does a double job.

i think they were saying less likely to strip your sh!t/fuse together, but I'm sure they were looking at it from a less work next time perspective. The guy "Doc" Bob is meticulous though, perhaps a bit too much...

I prefer to have the engine warmed through for changing the oil - usually after its sat awhile from a good ride. If your changing the oil filter though be careful of the headers - they will be still hot. Trouble with changing the filter is your bound to get oil over the left header pipe so I carefully thread then wrap a sheet of aluminium foil around it near the bottom of the engine case.

To help with the oil draining I drop the bike off the centre stand and place it on its sidestand - just watch out you dont knock your oil pan over....no I didnt but I came close...

    Cheers,

Nice, I would give you rep, but they don't have that feature on this board.

I have a 2000, can I get the filter socket from any Toyota Dealer? What year is the Camry you have? I have a socket from Auto Zone and it comes close, but not perfect.

Like someone else said use a little tin foil to keep the oil off the pipes. I like the pure one filters over the stock ones.

    VFR Oil & Filter Change

    My ride is a 2004 VFR800A
    Steps:
    1. Unlock Steering
    2. Place on Center Stand
    3. Remove Oil Filler Cap
    4. 17mm sock and short extension to remove drain plug
    5. Slip hand over the bottom of the fairing piece that holds the two side cowls together at the front, apply oil filter wrench. remove filter. (The plactic piece right behind the front wheel and has four screws) You might have to flex the plastic a bit, an extension from filter to socket wrench allows loosening through the vents in fairing.
    6. Alas some oil does dip on pipes. Quickly burns off albeit with foul odor.
    7. Reinstall all bits.

Once you change the oil a time or two you will develop a system that works for you.
It helps to let the pipes cool a bit to avoid sizzling your hands.

Great! Enjoy your ride. Its a great bike offer good service.

I think I even did a how-to with pics if you search here ---->http://vfrworld.com/forums/maintenance/4005-1998-vfr-800-oil-change-5th-generation.html

    give it a look-see

hey guys, did I state that right in the how-to about how to check the level. I can't rememebr now, do you check it running and it's between the lines or is it just after you shut it off, or does it matter?
