Look for the clattering on the wonky cam lobes and/or excessive valve clearances. Also, bad camchain tensioners cause rattles, ands VFs are infamous in that department. Backfires can be a result of incorrect cam timing........sometime a result of bad tensioners.

Sorry, but VF series bikes almost ruined Honda's reputation forever with their multiple mechanical issues.

Unless it's been carefully maintained, you'd need to be a masochist to own one. :behindsofa:

I think it's valve clearances for the rattle, and a dirty carb for the pop. Did you turn the throttle while starting and then it poped?

Years of experience says that noise is NOT valve clearances, but of course i could be mistaken cuz the audio isn't great.

Cam chain tensioners for sure. You can hear the chain. Valves may be loose also, but the tensioners are not working right.

I agree with you Grey, definitely sounds like a cam chain tensioner problem to me. Maybe some valve clearances off in the mix, but the main issue is the cam chain tensioner. I think the only way to replace that is to remove the heads, which will involve a rather costly head gasket to put back together. A used cam chain tensioner on eBay can be had for next to nothing. Used can last you a lifetime or go bad in just a few miles, so it's all up to you.

Something to consider, this is one of my bikes with the cams off 1 notch. Obsiously my noise was a lot louder, but when I zoom in on the engine do our ticks/clicks sound similar?

    YouTube - 1999 ZX9R Engine Noise/Rattle CCT?

Good luck! And don't rev it too much in it's present condition.
