TOE CUTTER has a good thread on carb cleaning with pictures. You might send him a PM and request the link to it.

you can set the carb assembly in the V of the engine so they set at the same angle as they would when fully installed. Hook the fuel line on and jump the fuel pump. You want to make sure no fuel leaks. If the floats are seating and the fuel tube o-rings are sealing, then no fuel should exit the carbs during the test. You could also do it on a bench and gravity feed from a fuel can.

Highly agree about the testing the carbs before installing them. I just had the fun this afternoon of a leaking float needle that filled two of my cylinders and carb throats on my VF500.

If I can't fix the corroded seat, I'll have to source one, which really sucks since the Front Range weather is supposed to be decent next week, but since most shops don't care to be open on Mondays, let alone Sundays...

to bench test your carbs you set them on the bench grab a beer, open the beer, take a pull on the beer, big sigh, drink more beer. then, hook up an "IV" bottle to your fuel inlet on the carbs, it won't give you the 2/3 PSI that the fuel pump does put it will tell you if you float is set correctly as far as leaking gas, as well as your rings on the bowls..pretty simple to do AND it is wise to do so you don't instal the carbs find out they leak and have to take them off again...

http://vfrworld.com/forums/mechanics-garage/22449-cleaning-carbs.html here is the link for TOECUTTERs thread.

BTW your cleaning your carbs..........not rebuilding them.... (my high school shop teacher would hammer folks when they said that they rebuilt their carbs....and he asked what they did and it turned out it was just a cleaning.....he would cuss something fierce and tell us that we weren't smart enough to rebuild a carb...)

you don't need the fuel pump... get a 2 liter bottle and a stopper(cork) make a hole in it so a fuel line tube will fit , duct tape a wire around it so it has a handle ...here is a picture to illustrate it better [IMG]

something like this will work.. just remember to poke a hole in the bottom and plug it so you can remove it to allow for pressurization

first let say I haven't had my VFR long enough to have had to do any work to it exept to replace the chain and tires, but I have had alot of old metrics. Whenever I have a carb problem but the bike starts, I drain the carbs and put in a heavy dose of sea foam and let it sit for a few days and then drain them, add fresh gas and see what happens. Many times thats all they need. If you need to break them down you can go to Bikebandit.com and they will have a complete diagram of the carbs and also list most if not all of the factory jet sizes. The diagram can also tell you where all those extra parts you have left from your kit go. And on most older metrics you have to have the airbox, pods, ect. hooked up before you test out how the carbs are. To much air they won't run right and you will think you messed up the rebuild or cleaning and start all over again. The air has to be restricted.
