Like Squirrel said, get it off and in your hand. One beer job at the max. It has been my experience that gen 2 starter clutch's do not crack so much as they tend to stick. But you need to rip it oot to find oot.

It is the starter clutch. On my 86 I just swapped out the entire unit for less than $100. Mine was a small crack, sounded bad but never left me stranded. I still have the small parts if needed. Better order a cover gasket now it is a real easy job

I think my VFR has the same issue.

Sometimes when you push the starter button it spins or clicks.

Classic starter clutch sounds. Just drain oil, remove right side engine cover (that textured coppery colored thing). scrape off the old gasket material. Remove and exam the starter clutch assembly. Replace worn parts, reinstall , replace gasket and side cover and refill with oil. There are pictures and videos here and online. Just search starter clutch on this forum. See if you can buy the entire assembly used as they are no longer available from Honda. You can still get the cover gasket from Honda. Google Service Honda for online parts.

I had to replaced the 3 small springs on my VTR starter clutch when one broke. Only cheap Honda part i ever found: 47 cents each.

Always try to re-use the cover gasket as that's WAY easier than scraping old stuff off, cheaper too.

I keep spare gaskets on hand but have not needed to use them in years as they do come off intact most of the time. Lean the bike over saves the oil drain......a really easy quick job to swap it oot.
