(The part of Squirrel Man will be played by TOE CUTTER in this post)

Most project bikes are going to nickle and dime you to death. This one as described is seriuosly gonna do some damage to your wallet and sanity. Run Forest, run! For free and I am all in for the save.......damn that did not sound like Squirrel at all.

Wow, I've been triple dog dared! Good thing I'm not lacking in self-confidence and have the ability to ignore the taunts!

While I understand the folks saying get a newer bike, that's not really the point here. Back in my younger days there were two bikes I lusted for, the Nighthawk S, and the 500 Interceptor. I've got the Nighthawk S, and it is an outstanding bike. So, now I need/want the 500.

In the interest of sanity though, I don't think I'll start with this particular one. The guy sent me some more close up pics yesterday, and it's rough. I've got some suspicions of damage, and the guy just seems a little shady, so I'm going to pass on this one.

I'll keep looking for a 500 somewhere in the Southeast. Anyone know of a decent one for sale, let me know.

Boy, it's a good thing that I didn't listen to the nay-sayers when I bought most of my VF's. If I had, I wouldn't have the terrific, great running, dependable motorcycles that I currently enjoy at a fraction of the cost of going out and buying them in 'good' condition.

It's interesting to see how people's words and actions will tell a completely different story. I find it humorous when someone says not to buy an older bike, yet they have more than one of their own.... that need/needed work.... and they love..... and they won't sell......

creaky, appreciate the offer, bud!! I'm going to have to pass right now. It's pretty easy to squirrel away $300 for a project bike, $1800 +/- is another ball of wax.

BTW, here are pics of the one I'm passing on. If interested, it's on the Auburn Alabama CL for $500, but he seems willing to negotiate. On second look it looks like he not only spraybombed the frame, but the engine as well.

I think I need to save up a few more dollars to move up into the $1000-$1500 range for a bike.

offer him $250 and hang on to it for parts. Find another $5-600 project and between the two you might come out ahead.

Seriously that is some good advice! The best thing I EVER did for my old 500 was to buy a parts bike.

that actually doesn't look as bad as I pictured. Did you say it was running? I've already read two pages of replies so I don't even remember anymore... The missing plastics will cost a few $$. The front fairing actually looks pretty good. Is the tank dented or straight? Noted dents in the frame or anything? I'm borderline on it. It'll prob cost more than the nighthawk to fix, but judging from your work on the nighthawk, you can handle it. Offer $150 and see what happens...
