So there is no dedicated forum section for photography that I can see, so I hope the 'general' area is ok for this.

I'm busy backing up shoots to 3rd drive & hard copies & I just came across a motorbike shoot I did back in May 2009. Man, its crazy how time flies. Anyways, this is what I do for a living. I shoot full time. I think this is the last motorbike shoot I've done up to now. I shoot a mass amount of cars for the automotive mags here in South Africa, but very few of the bike mags are willing to pay for decent photography. I do have a job coming up for a UK based magazine called Rides at the end of this month. The ed is here in Cape Town for a BMW launch, so we're getting a couple bikes for the weekend & going to shoot a story on it.

Anyways, let me get to the pictures! :)

ps: Anyone in Cape Town wanting a bike shoot like this, feel free to get hold of me & I'll gladly send you a pricelist.

    Comments welcome.

you can H, with proper lighting technics.... these turned out really nice.

I have a question though, what did you use to shoot the close ups? I did some studio shots on my buddies custom bike and I had a hell of a time getting all the reflected "stuff " off of the bike? it looks like you are usind some pretty big soft boxes....

SP, we do a calendar every year, and you could have easily gotten a photo in there to give you a little bit of exposure. Granted it's a niche market being we are VFR specific, but who knows...

Any chance at getting a tip or two for us aspiring hobbiest photographers?

I'm guessing there was some post production editing in software?

Absolutely love the shots. I'd die if I could get just one photo to turn out like that in my life. Thanks a lot for sharing them.

We all start somewhere bud. A few years ago I only dreamed of shooting decent stuff like I saw the 'big guys' do. Its just practice, practice and some more practice.

    Only a pleasure.

haha, I wish. I'm currently chatting to Honda SA about doing their press packs, but its the vehicle side, not the bikes side. Maybe one day.

I go the other way of thinking. I like having highlighting in my shots as it gives your object shape & depth. One of the hardest challenges is making a 2D picture look like it has some depth. So I shoot so that I DO get reflections.

Maybe next year? I'll try make a point of shooting another VFR bike before then.

Sure man. I think people very often think that a shoot (or photos) just 'happen'. There is the bike, I have a camera & snap I have a photo. Its unfortunately not like that at all. Its planning your location, subject, time of day, how the lighting suits that time of day or your existing light. 80% of photography is the light you use or lighting itself. If you don't have strobes, then work on using the best natural light you can get. So early mornings, early evenings, dusk. Then it sometimes can be easier to get a great shot because your lighting is already halfway there.

Hope that helps you out a bit. :)

    haha, noted, thanks.

I've never actually seen a catalogue, so maybe I should go try get hold of one.

Yep. Not this one though. I have a 3rd Gen Black 750F.
