    Hey everybody!
I'm new to the board. I'm contemplating buying a HONDA 1984 VF1000F. It's stocked to the gills with extras (Ohlins, the cam oil system, hindle exhaust, etc). It seems like a helluva deal my only problem is I'm starting a new business so my cash flow sucks (it's a motorcycle storage facility in Gowanus Brooklyn btw called Machinacycles.com check it out!). In any event I'm torn. I've been obssessed with the look of this bike for some time but I was hoping to get some thoughts from any of you. Merits and negatives? I've heard the carbs are a SOB to pull. I've also heard about the oil flow problem to the cams which this bike already has taken care of. Is it low end torquey or smooth all the way through? Also is there a dual front lamp kit for it? This might turn into an epic thread but I'm all ears and excited to get some real feedback about this bike.

i dont know much about the vf1000r's, other than they are awesome, but having a 3d gen vfr. i can tell you it is a blast to ride. the 4th gens look nicer though and have more parts out there. they dont have the hot 8 spoke rear wheel though

good luck with the bike and the company. i say go for the vf1000r if the deal is too good to pass up.

I have an 84 1000 and also an 85 700. Physically they are nearly identical in size; dont hold me to this but I'm almost sure they use the same frame. I think the 1000 might be about 50lbs heavier. The 1000R they are talking about above is a little bit of a different motorcycle than the 84 1000F. It has an updated engine and full plastics

Having all of the aftermarket stuff is a big plus but I would buy it ONLY if it has been very well maintained over the years. There was a recall way back in the 80's for the cams and if it had the recall done and has the top end oiling mod it will probably be ok. My 1000f has 56k miles ans runs like a beast.

I would say get the 1000 over a 750 any day of the week. Its not that much heavier and it is quite a bit more powerfull. It has a smooth powerband, good midrange and when it hits 7k you better be ready for acceleration. I do have to say though neither the 750 or the 1000 are as fun as the 500

A good one is a great bike. I`ve had 4 complete 1000F`s but the first 2 were sold on and they had flattened cam lobes and furrowed rockers. The suspension is not great, it is 25-ish years old and not great to begin with. The Ohlins will help but I would update the forks and the wheels also. With updated suspension/wheels/tires done right they are a real blast to have. Transforms the bike into something clsoe to modern. Can`t stress this enough.

The 1000R is a different animal. Both have pretty seamless power. Go for the 1000, the 750 is fun but no replacement for displacement, etc.

Thanks everybody for the tips! I ended up going for the bike. Cash problems aside, as soon as I heard that bike run I was sold. That V4 through the 4-2-1 Hindle just screamed. Talk about Perma Grin. Wow.

The previous owner was OBSSESSIVE. He kept a massive book of every receipt for every part and service he had done. He had all of the original brochures, even the parts fiches.
I'm going to start cataloguing the massive amount of stock parts that come with the bike as well to sell (so I can lessen the blow of the investment). I am so excited. Too bad it's freaking cold in Brooklyn now, well the bike has heated grips on it! I'm going to be posting pics of the parts I'm selling very shortly in the classifieds!

    Hey Tom
What sort of suspension did you modify with? It has a Lindemann suspension on the front right now, and then the Ohlins on the rear. The jury is out still about the small wheels (I'm used to my current daily rider which has a 19" and a 18")

Here's the first pic of the bike. Can't wait to give some more. I'm selling off a lot of parts in the Classified Section to help pay off the bike so keep checking back!

The bike sounds savage. This is my first V bike ever, let alone a V Four. Here's a little sound clip. The bike was still warming up since it hasn't been running very often in the last couple of months. Sorry for the poor camera work

Hey Pcohen. 15K miles on it so far. I'm planning on putting another solid 15K miles on it very very soon. This was the bike I should have crossed the country on recently instead of my Triumph Bonneville, but the Bonnie worked out real well for me anyway. Heated Grips on this bike would have made that trip much much more pleasant

Welcome! I own the '86 VF1000R and love it. As far switching out the headlamp for dual, I have read that it has been done. The black frame piece (not sure on the precise name) in which the headlamp, gauges and mirrors are set is different. It will fit on fine, but the bottom bolt under the lamp has a different configuration entirely and will require some work to make it all fit correctly.

Hey Does anybody know if it's safe to use synthetic oil with an 84 VF1000F?
