So I was looking at the specs for my bike and it is supposed to have 6 gears? I only have 5... did it come like this on only a few of them or has something fishy happened?

almost certain shift pattern and number of gears should be stamped on the side cover of the motor right by the shift lever.

Once i figure what parts i need exactly ill def take you up on that offer.

And yes tinkerinWstuff on the sprocket cover it says its 1 down and 5 up, but it only goes 1 down and 4 up. Anyone ever heard of this problem? all other gears work just fine, but i 6th just isnt there.

suspect bent shift fork between 5th and 6th. Any evidence the bike has been down? Bent shift fork could happen from the bike going down on it's left side in 5th or 6th gear.

Does the shift lever feel like it runs up against a wall? Normally when you shift, there's a long throw to the lever as it moves past one gear and into the next. Say when you're in first gear and try to go down farther, you experience a short throw of the lever as it "runs up against a wall" and won't go a full stroke.

I'm wondering if you get the same reaction in 5th when you go up and try to go to sixth? If I'm in sixth and try for another gear, I get a short stroke because there's nothing left. If somehow the shift pin were missing or broken (one in a million), I theorize you could get a full stroke of the lever but not move to a gear.

More details on your problem are needed.

Part of the shifting mechanism can be viewed without removing or splitting the motor. There's a cover on the side for access to the shift arm and star. I would peek in here before going shoulders deep in her. Example and more info here: http://www.factorypro.com/prod_pages/prodh20.html

I am pretty sure if the ratchet portion of the shifter is assembled incorrectly this is possible........been a while since I did one but there are timing marks to align during assembly. Wanna say I remember messing this up once myself.

I am not versed enough in gearing so I couldn't really say for sure which fork runs which gears etc.. Certainly plausible in my book that going down in one gear could mess up shifting for another.

There are timing marks on the end of the drum and the ratchet assembly, I got a twelve pack to bet that this is your problem. Remove the shift shaft cover and realign the timing marks and my beer is on that you will be good to go. It is a bit of a Martha Faulker dealing with all the little parts and springs but not complicated, just irritating. Maybe a three beer job.

Hold on, wasn't I first to suggest the ratchet back in post #10?

But I'm in for the beer bet anyway
