The U.S, has been selling weapons and technology to India and Pakistan for years. At least they buy it. The Chinese just steal it.

Custer better watch his ass IMO..

India used to be a Socialist biased country so bought mainly Russian MIGs and SAMs in the past so as far as high tech Military aircraft, missiles etc USA selling to India is relatively new. Also looks like India has just signed off on the C17s purchase but before seriously considering the FA18 India want the highly advanced AESA* radar fitted to the Super Hornets which the US is still balking at. ( * Australia has AESA in all our new F/A18 Super Hornets )

The writing is on the wall, the U.S. economy can no longer support buying Harley Davidsons, or much of anything else for that matter. It's not about saving jobs, it's about saving the company from Chapter 11. After it is all said and done I would be surprised if a solitary job gets saved from this, other than the board of directors and a couple handfuls of executives.

It's only a matter of time before they move most of the manufacturing out of the U.S.. This is normally how the first step in this process takes place. You make a deal to start slow and only allow certain bits and pieces to be assembled locally, then after proving your work force and manufacturing base are capable, they quietly allow them to start assuming more and more of the process. Eventually, the flow of parts is reversed and eventually there is no longer a need for big medical benefits packages and retirement plans and union contracts. It is a proven model, not hyperbole and opinion.

KC got it right, or maybe I'm ignorant too. BTW I'm really digging this Coco's Ichibanya #7 hot curry I'm eating while typing this...... I saw the writing on the wall a couple years ago, that's why I went to a company with a global reach. Just look at the latest G-20 meeting, the U.S. yields little economic or manufacturing power in the 21st century.

Yep, It's a world market ever since those Japanese dudes figured out how to make motorcycles out of old beer cans. Next damn thing ya know they'll be making a bike that looks like a Harley and making monster movies to flood our markets.

On eating out I'd say while never having Pakistani, enjoy eating a good steak at (eg) US chain "Outbacks" occasionally and loving a good Tandoori or Vindaloo from my local Indian that Thai is my regular favourite also.

    Bullshit NCB.

Profitable manufacturing can happen in the U.S. if certain people at the top of some of these companies pull their heads out of their ass.

examples; HAAS, Mazak, Honda to name just three.

Bullshit? that doesn't seem to be an intelligent response from someone who believes they understand the current global economy, I expected better than that.

Nice, out of the entire USA you bring up a couple of comparitively small companies and a foreign company. The foreign company that has downsized their efforts in the last two years to boot. Wait until the latest Asia-Pacific free trade pact is settled upon, then you can see what I'm talking about. After all, NAFTA worked out so well. Just for fun, check out GlaxoSmithKlein, Whirlpool, Caterpillar and Ford Motor Company.

Actually, two if them are foreign. Mazak is a privately held, family owned Japanese company that did 2.9 billion in worldwide sales 2009. As compared with Harley that apparently did 3.5billion during the same. Mazak's model is to manufacture their commodity products in the local economy where they are consumed - same as what Harley is attempting to do here.

    Harley-Davidson, Inc. - Financial Statements | Harley-Davidson USA

I don't see Harley holding on to it's core consumer if they tried to move the shop. The problem that happens with US manufacturers is that management is lazy. When looking at automation in their own plant, they balk at the purchase price and don't consider return on investment. The same guy who balked at buying the $250k machine to remain competitive walks into purchasing and asks the buyer to get a quote from Asia on buying the widget instead of manufacturing it.

Then we have China and Turkey who have favorable government policy toward manufacturing and capital investments.

I'm not saying bullshit to to what you said about the process of offshoring. Watched it happen several times just like you said above. Just disagree that the only way to be profitable is to move offshore. So my point is to say that if Japanese companies can manufacture in the US and be profitable, then US companies should be able to do the same.

Outbacks in my hood are amazingly good. Some of that Paki curry is great. Some not so great. Kind of like Kimchee. Ya got the supermarket stuff then ya got some that is very strange indeed.

Actually interesting to see something akin to a real debate with some thought behind it on here.

    Go NCB

    Go Tinker

I've been carping for years to no one because no one will listen that manufacturing in the US cannot continue to decline and still support a vibrant growing market for all those goods made elsewhere. Being both a NAFTA beneficiary and victim at the same time has taught me that (its complicated, you wouldnt want to know, and its rather boring).

While the US is and always will most likely be a center for innovation, because no matter how much we like to denigrate ourselves, we know that we as a whole come up with some amazing shit, just because we are willing to be the folks that take everyone in, its difficult in that environment to get across that the day to day nuts and bolts type stuff has to continue to happen.

It may seem that having Silcon Valley and Harley Davidson in the same country wont work, but I say it will, with a little bit of just a few people willing to back off just a tiny bit on the bottom line and give those that make it happen on daily basis their due, it can happen.

Drumming my fingers now on the desk waiting impatiently for Badbilly to come up something other than just wit.........

Try Lamb chops with mint yogurt sauce from a good Indian Restaurants Tandoori oven, for some reason there are very few entrées that taste better to me than that.
