I know a common question but I gotta ask.

Hey guys, Just went and looked at a very nice 01 model with 24k on her. She has a two brothers pipe and K&N filter, other than that she is all stock and looks great. I love my 2nd gen but something newer is bound for my garage and I figure might as well be a VFR. I plan on keeping my 2nd gen though. The bike is $2500 which seems like a pretty decent deal. Oh and she is red, but I might repaint her at some point. I know my 2nd gen pretty well, just finished the f2 conversion a few months ago but know nothing about the 5th gens. Except the R/R issue. Gonna pick it up in a couple days.

    What do guys think?

Already planning for a DB shield and a Sargent seat.

Also is installing braided lines as hard as some say? I'm pretty mechanical inclined. Thanks

Bikes are cheap over there. I bought a red 00 with 28000km (approx 18000miles) for $6000.
The R/R thing is a cheap fix from wiremybike.com
Not sure about the braided lines. However it is on my list.
    Good luck with it

That is a good price on the last year of the gear driven cams. I also did an F2 conversion on my '87 back in '93. I went to racing school on that bike. Out of my past 15 VFRs, the 98-01 is my favorite. I just can't come to like the VTECs (sorry guys). Out of all those VFRs and countless miles I've only replaced three R/Rs. As far as the brake lines, if you change those there is a lot of bleeding to do. I ditched the linked brakes on two of my 5th gens and loved it. Get it!

I love my '01. I had the $ for a gen 6 but chose not to spend it. On mine i bought the latest OEM RR and ensured the spade connectors were crushed tight, secured the working old one under the seat as a spare and added a Datel Voltmeter. For me, I don't think enough of the V-Tech or the styling to want one and I like the gear driven cams. I put some time in on my buddy's '90 VFR before I got mine, you will love it too. Enjoy!

    Thanks TC.

I bought the 5th gen. Took her on a 326 mile ride sat. Up and over Sonor pass and back over Ebbets pass. Always a great ride. Bike was great as expected and I was very impressed with the Sargent seat. My arse never felt so good after a ride. Came across another casual forum member on a 97 model he had 145k miles on. Nice guy. Looks like my 2nd gen will be getting a lot less use.

Good choice, those roads are beautiful too. I upgraded to a fifth gen this summer from my old kawa after i rode a friends fourth gen. I knew i wanted a vfr and knew i wanted a gear driven cam model. My 99 is pretty identical to yours save a couple little cracks in the plastic from the previous owner. The bike is a joy to ride, though i am jealous of the sargent seat, looking to get myself one of those. Have fun with it.

I love the 5th Gen and still have my 2k VFR. The 5th Gen bike you are looking at sounds really nice and the price is good (01 was the last year of the Gen 5 VFR). Prices on the 6 Gen VFRs are going down, but nothing like the price you quoted on the 2001 you are looking at. Check if the battery and R/R have been replaced and if the plugs have been replaced yet. You sound mechanically competent so the 5th Gen VFR should not be much of a challenge for you. Good luck with what you decide.
