The reason I ask is because the last 2 bikes that I have bought the previous owner stated that he would turn on the choke, and leave it untill the rpms got to a certain number.

Both of them volenteered this information, but to me this doesent seem like the proper way of doing it.

when the engine is cold pouring a access amount of fuel into it runs it harder. to me it seems that it would be better to use the choke to get the bike started, and then let it idle without the choke untill it warms up.

Forcing as high of an rpm on cold internal parts of the engine just feels like excessive stress.

When I take a few more moments and let the bike warm up ideling rather than choking it as hard as possible, it seems there is less head chatter from the valves and i guess i just get a general feel that i am not stressing the engine while its cold.

am i nuts? what is your practice when its cold?

i choke it to high idle for maybe 10-15 sec then gradually reduce the choke so it idles around 2000rpm. While it's doing that i get my gear on and go. I'll kill the choke as i'm going down the road with in the first 1/2 mile. I run 100% syn motor oil so oil starvation isn't an issue.

Make sure that when you wait for the bike to warm up to check your tire pressure.

My fifth gen has a "choke" but it is really only a fast idle lever as the fuel injection does the enrichment. I start it on choke, wait 3 seconds or so for it to clear out and start to increase to about 3k rpm. From there i slowly ease the lever the whole way off. So the choke is really only on for about 15 seconds. (A carbureted bike may not idle without a little choke in colder weather from startup though) I then ride very gently and keep the revs down, usually below 4500 or so until she gets most of the way warmed up. The bike would take so long to warm up when idling that i think it is actually better to ride it so the engine warms up faster, just don't wring her neck until the temp gauge gets close to normal.

    I get the irony!

I actually thought he was well behaved for a while. His latest account was around for maybe 3 weeks? It was a dead giveaway though in another thread - I can't remember the title of it - where him and one of his "buddies" were going back and forth like their own personal chat room.

Has anyone seen or herd of excessive choking actually causing problems with the engine.

mainly the rings or valves I would assume.

No but I heard it can lead to autoerotic asphyxiation. Be careful out there.
