    Hi Guys / Girls

I have spent a few hours searching the forums on here regarding the dreaded rectifier issue.

I am now on my 2nd Rectifier and I suffer the usual symptoms with the clock resetting to 0:00 therefore I assume the Rectifier is on its way out again.
I have fitted a new battery and the bike is maintained on a trickle charger (Optimate) therefore their is no plausible reason for this to happen.

    My question is simply:

"What is the best Rectifier to buy?" I am familiar with the later OEM part which has been posted on here but I note that that too has a 25% fail rate.

I would prefer a UK stockist in order to keep the costs down, alternatively the other Rectifier I have found is the "1998-1999 Honda VFR800F VFR 800F Regulator Rectifier Heavy Duty" from this website in the States:

    Regulator Rectifier VFR800F Honda

Any help on the best part would be most appreciated

It's a compounded problem. There are issues with the wiring harness as well. Buying the "best" R/R without addressing issues on the wire harness may just cause you to continue burning up R/R's

I bought my RR from www.regulatorrectifier.com as well. About 4000 miles ago earlier this summer. No problems with it as of yet. The product is built somewhere in asia as I recal so there are probably other sources for the same part.

This guy is a great guy to do business with but has been having stock issues all summer.

The part you should also consider getting is this:

    Hi Tinker

Thanks for your response. I will most certainly look at upgrading both parts.
As a self confessed electrical numpty, is this modification (harness) easy to do ?

I have a gorgeous Yellow 1999 VFR which for the last 2 years has lived in my garage without use mainly because I have ticked off with the reliability of the Rectifier and also not wanting to be caught out miles from home. But its time to take her out of retirement and use her for what she was intended to be used for.

I have 2 other bikes and I must say the VFR is the best by far. Understandably the other 2 are Italian and they too come with their own problems.

    Thanks again for the response.

my understanding is that his harness should be plug-n-play. you'll have to remove some covers and route the wires, securing with electrical tape and/or zip ties for protection. But the connectors for that model year bike are already done for you (I believe). The wire is heavier gauge to better handle the heat and produce less resistance (building more heat) which his what eventually causes the system to fail.

I recently purchased the RR mentioned above when I picked up this bike and it wasn't charging. I got about 3500 miles and found it quit charging again but found the problem to be intermittent. After further investigation, I discovered the stator plug had minor burning but the wiring on the harness side was stiff and the shielding was brittle. Cutting the shield back I found the wires were corroded and green. Cut the bad section of wire out and soldered in 3 new spade connectors. Rode 100 miles yesterday with no charging problems. This winter I will do the VFRness update.

You will need to find a new ground (earth) point near the R/R for the VFRness but other than that it's plug-and-play. You'll want to inspect the wires/connector coming out of the alternator. If they are badly burnt/corroded you'll want to replace them.

also, invest in and always use a battery tender... I am still on my original (1992) rectifier and battery - 18 years later.

Hi MV, Yes it is easy to do. My suggestion is take a few photos before pulling the old rectifier out. This way you can re-route them the same way.
+1 for the VFRness. Yes, easy to do.
    Good luck with it

betarace, I bet if you leave that battery off the trickle charger for a day or so, the battery goes dead...not because of any problems with the charging system but you have made it memorize its " empty " and "full" capacity... I am interested to see how long I can keep this battery.... I have a plus , I ride mine every day so no need for a trickle charger..

I have a healthy distrust of bike charging systems so fitted one of these battery monitors

At least if the RR goes stupid you have the chance to knock the lights off and ride home on the battery alone - if you're lucky

you would lose that bet. The bike is regularly off the battery tender for extended periods - 4 days in deals gap and track weekends almost every month. Works every time. When plugging it back in (no matter how long it has been off) it floats for 10 mins and goes full charge
