I am thinking about buying a 99 vfr at my local shop it has 44,000 miles one owner, they want 4500 out the door for it. I am trying to find out about the up keep and maintance on a 5th gen My 2nd gen is relatively low maintance and low cost. The hardest part is finding parts when i need them. I just don't want to get into something that I won't be able to afford later. If yall can help i would be very thankful.

My first reaction is the price seems kinda high for an 11 year old bike with over 40K on the dial? I've seen lower mileage 6th Gens selling for around that. I think it's a buyers market when it comes to luxury items like motorcycles, boats, RV's.

I can't personally vouch for the reliability of a 99, but it seems to be pretty bullet proof provided regular maintenance has been performed and other known issues been resolved.

IMO - I'd look around for a lower mileage one before you jump on this one.

4,500 is way too high for that kind of mileage. I got my '99 with only 1,500 miles on it for 5 grand. If the bike's in a good condition a fair price would be 2,500.

As for parts fortunately, you can still get a lot of parts for the '99 and the only issue I ever ran into was that a rubber tube for the fuel pump is on nation-wide backorder. Fortunately a workaround is to get a 6th gen fuel pump, they are compatible.

+1 on the $ vs mileage. Try an allofcraigs search for 5th gens to get an idea of asking prices nationwide. The bike s/b good for 100k +. The bottom ends are stout and will go the distance if maintained. Most issues are electrical. Check out wiremybike.com for solutions. I'll bet the dealer gave $1500 - maybe $2 grand on the trade in. My preference w/b for the lowest mileage unit available even if it is a few $ more.

Two gen 6 for sale in my area one for $4200 with 12k on the clock (2003) and another for $3900 with 9k on the clock (2004). $4500 is a little steep.

thanks I thought the price was high especially for the mileage unfortunatly in my area the vfr is not a very popular bike and can be hard to come by. I am wondering at what price I should be trying to get it for. I'm pretty confindent that the bike has been serviced the way it is supposed to be and is in great shape. But I also don't want to get f@#k over either. There are two other vfr in my area to compare it to and on is an 03 with 3400 miles a great deal but it is still a little out of my price range at 5500 and a 97 with 26000 miles for 3500

Way to high $ but thats the dealer for ya one of my local dealer had 98' 20k? $ 3800 and you still have to pay title and other stuff. I looked for a while to find mine most I looked at were around 3k to 3500 and that was too high IMO. And alot were busted plastic and no upgrades. I finally found mine for 1900 had 70k but never down and 2k worth of upgrades and very well maintianed. I had to drive 4 hours one way to get it but well worth the 100 in gas. The good ones are out there but hard to find especially if you want 5th gen. If you got 4 to drop get a 6th gen cause they have hard cases.

This one does have some upgrades it already has aftermarket exhaust, power comander, and throtlemiser installed. The bike also looks to be in excellent shape i wasn't even able to find a scratch on it. I am going to riding when they open up Tue and if he will come down a little on it to 4000 out the door i might just go ahead and get it. I don't have that much cash and would have to finance it so it may be worth it so that that i don't have to find a lender. I thank you all for your input and i will definately let you know which way I go.
