when is it time for a fork rebuild?

    im not as easy on my forks as i should be, so how do i know when is it time?

    Assuming you keep up on your fluid changes according to your manual -

    You would rebuild your forks when they start leaking or when you aren't happy with their performance (preload and rebound). During the rebuild, you would inspect the slider bushings to see if they were worn and replace as necessary.

    Whenever you can detect ANY sideways motion between upper and lower fork tubes (best done with cap off and spring removed).

    guess ill have to get my manual out and take a look. they seem to preform the same as when i bought it, but i do notice fluid on the fork.

    If the seals need to be changed, you pretty much have to damage/destroy the bushings to disassemble the forks, since you are using them as a slide hammer. So seal replacement usually means bushing replacement, aka fork rebuild.

    You can use a dipstick like a ruler to get a measurement of oil level if the springs are out and the wheel is lifted so that forks are fully compressed.

    there is a slight leak. so i think ill rebuild them this winter. they will get through the next month or two. then the season is done.

    need a new seat too
