uh no you have to have two other passengers with you.... yes one person ohn the bike and you can use the carpool lane..... also if you ride a bike to any parking garage, at least here in Santa Barbara, you don't have to pay to park.. but anyway back to the original topic.. my school commute used to take me 15 minutes on the way to school then on the way home it usually took me an hour... I would take the long way home after class.... I did this everyday except rain.. I choose not to ride in the rain, because I HATE it plus I have a laptop with me and I'm not gonna get it wet....

Lane splitting in CA can attract a LEO if you are going at ridiculous speeds and recklessly passing people up. It's not exactly "legal" to lane split, its actually the officer's prerogative if he wants to stop you. I've passed LEO's up lane splitting and some will even move over and let you go by! If you're riding like you have good sense then there shouldn't be an issue. It's safer to split the lane then it is to get crunched between 2 semi trucks when traffic suddenly stops on the freeway...

The best pert about commuting is that I get to start and finish my day with a motorcycle ride! It has nothing to do with milage.

by encouraging people to carpool, which carpool lanes do, it causes a reduction of traffic and thus of overall emissions

lane splitting can save a lot of time, a lot

I think they are an idiot. Especially if you can set up your commute to take in some nice roads. I used to commute by bike 4 days a week, 25 miles each way, never tired of it, well at least not specifically hte on the bike part.

CA contributes an amazing amount of agriculture to the world, we are the largest grower and/or exporter of many crops, both in the US and sometimes the largest in the world

On a cost per mile basis, for most of us the bike is probly more expensive than most of our cars. It is rare to be able to make a solid economic case to buy a bike.

now that one depends on your right hand. and how much you drive. 20 minutes to work and back will end up costing more after insurance. but for someone like me who does 100+ miles a day you can save money real quick.

i rode last night, 5 bucks gave me 3/4 of a tank. it was so freakin refreshing. truly was an amazing fealing. my trucks takes 75 to fill up.

For 10 years, I did about 200 miles a day (five days a week)...rode company bike for the job. I never got tired of it and after my job description changed I kept riding, but only to and from work, and for pleasure (35 miles a day, to and from work). Seems I trade bikes about every 4 years, but may keep the 07 VFR I bought a few months ago. Really love it.

But you didn't sell the truck, right? So for most the bike's costs are an add on, and quickly eat up the small savings in gas. I am talking about the cost of not only the gas, but for tires which are much much more costly for a bike than the average car, oil filters, oil, parts for the bike, helmet, other gear, etc. When you look at the total cost per mile of operating a bike, it isn't as cheap as you might think. Then you add in that for most it is an additional vehicle, and doesn't replace the car/truck/SUV and the economics don't really make as much sense as a cursory glance would have you think. Never mind those of us, rare as it may be, who actually get better mileage in our cars...

when i first started riding i took insurance off my vehicle and rode every day. if it rained i took my wife to work and used her vehicle. im not working as much as i was (hopefully itl pickup soon) but i was doing 300 miles every day. with that many miles i save at least 200-250 a month in gas. atm im spending around 400 a month in gas (no bike).

250 per month adds up pretty quick. plus another 60 for not having car insurance at that time.

Like I said for most of us as most aren't going to drop their insurance on their car, but even still, the savings does not add up to $250 a month. The gas savings may, but you are not, repeat, not, putting $250 a month in your pocket every month by saving $250 a month on gas. How much do you spend on tires per mile for the bike versus the truck. What depreciation are you experiencing with the bike for the miles driven and time owned. What discount on your car insurance don't you get for not keeping your policy in place for more than a year? what is the cost of the bike insurance? What is the cost of motorcycle oil versus car oil, of motorcycle oil filters versus car oil filters and on and on and on. All of that whittles away at your savings of $250 a month?

presumably the same mileage as you would get in a car/truck/suv/bike? Meaning that part of the equation doesn't change depending on which vehicle you use.

My truck gets 12 miles per gallon, my bike gets 40. heck, even my car only gets 20. I can assure you i am saving that much. i may have to buy bike tires more often, but when i buy tires for my truck they are 4 times as much, 180 bucks a tire for my truck.

if you are only driving 20 miles to work and back, no you wont save anything, but if you are doign 300 miles per day you definatly will.

    300 miles 5 days a week, 4 weeks a month = 6000 miles a month

    6000 \ 40mpg = 150 gallons * 2.8 $\gallon = 420 bucks a month
    6000 \ 20mpg = 300 gallons * 2.8 $\gallon = 840 bucks a month

If i got paid mileage like the other guys with better titles doign the same work did, i wouldent have bought my bike. but saving 420 a month, well makes up for the extra insurance cost. and sure, i may have to buy tires more often, but used race tires are near brand new for me and are half the cost, and again, tires for my dodge are around 180 a peice.
