    Hello all!

I've been snooping around the forums here for the past couple weeks while doing research on the bike I'm purchasing and VFR's in general. A lot of great information scattered throughout the forum, thanks everyone!

On Monday, I am finalizing the sale of a red 1998 VFR800 and hope to get out riding right away! This will be my first bike and I am really excited to get comfortable with riding soon so I can get on some of the longer road trips safely.

Here are some images of the bike from the dealer's website:

Hope to see some of you on the road!

Edit: Apparently I accidentally posted the same pic twice.... fixed

Congrats man - enjoy the new ride.

Ask the dealer for the grab handles, rear cowl and the "frankenbolts" which are missing in the pics. Maybe change the R/R if it's original (doubtful 12 years later) and your good to go for years!

Nice looking bike--kinda looks like my '01.

First bike? Congrats, but take it easy until you get some experience. VFR's are well-known for their smoothness, and good manners around town, commuting etc. But don't be fooled--you twist that throttle, she'll go!:scooter:

Thanks for the suggestions, I'll definitely have to ask about those things before I take the bike home.

Since I've been looking at (and now buying) a bike, my dad has gotten the itch and is looking at a cruiser. It would be nice to get out and ride with him. He's looking at a '10 Kawi Vulcan 900. It's a nice bike, but definitely not something I would want to ride.

This is going to be a LONG weekend waiting to get the VFR... I want to get on the road now!

You've got yourself a great bike. I once had a new '99 5th Gen like yours and I had no complaints. It's an awesome bike. How many miles are on it? From the looks of your pictures, I bet they're pretty low. Congratulations.

It has a mere 10,120 miles on it, but it does look like the previous owner dropped it in the garage. Just a couple of scuffs, nothing major.

Sounds and feels almost like a brand new bike, this week is sure to be a blast!

You said "this will be my first bike", etc.? Do you know how to ride?

If not, I would advise you to ask the dealer to deliver the bike to your home.

Then I would advise you to leave it parked in your garage until you have finished
a MSF course. This is not a learner's bike.

I have taught over 9,000 people in 24 years and know of many sad stories
where they have crashed their bikes before getting proper training.

    Good luck ~

Yes, I have ridden before. It has been a long time, however. I am actually getting ready to leave for the last day of a MSF training. I knew it would be extremely helpful after a long time out of the saddle to take the course with some hands on instruction.

    That's awesome. Congrats!
My first bike was this old 87 VFR, great first bike. Yours is also a great first bike (if anything, just a little bit big/heavy)

Here's to many safe, fun miles and trips

Thanks again all! Just got home from the last training (BARELY beat the storms that are rolling through) and passed with flying colors. Definitely will be signing up for some of the more advanced courses in the future. The instructors were awesome and everything seemed to flow very nicely. Not to mention I met some great people there too!

Hopefully the weather will cooperate with me tomorrow as I pick up the bike!

If you get the chance, after a bit of riding, take the advanced course. It's based on the military sport bike course. I took the military one and I found it to be excellent. Also, make sure you have the appropriate gear for riding. If your stuff is more than 5 years old, consider getting new. There are plenty of web sites out there that sell left over stuff and last years models, and you can get a really good deal. Good luck.

So, first I'm not able to pick up the bike until this morning. Fine, no big deal, I can wait a few days right? I had a blast riding it home and getting used to it, etc. Got home and had lunch with my mother, went to show off to my friend and stopped at a gas station to top it off before heading to work at 3. At this time it's about 2pm so I have about 30 minutes before I have to leave for work. Just as some kid, about 8 years old says "Wow, you have a nice bike!" I tried to start it up... Nothing! The battery is dead after about an hour or 2 of riding and me needing to be at work soon... perfect... Called back to the dealer that sold it to me and they sent out a truck and trailer to get it back to the dealer to check it out.

Here I come to find out that the battery isn't getting the full 14v charge while running. No wonder it died. They are putting in a new battery and getting the other parts ordered tomorrow morning and hopefully have it ready by Friday/Saturday.

I've been trying to get this darn thing into my garage for almost 3 weeks! Problem after problem with this dealer. I've since contacted the owner of the place and told her what kind of experience I've had with her sales reps, and financial managers. Most of the people I dealt with were great, however, some were not so much. Hopefully I can get a free tank bag or something.. anything out of it for all this trouble.

    /end rant

Have them check out the regulator/rectifier, battery, charging system, etc... I probably wouldn't worry about the tank bag, but whatever work they do should be covered and you shouldn't have to shell out a dime. And, I would try to get that in writing if you can. CYA. Good luck.

Whatever the dealer does for the repair, once you get it home check out this website for a charging system upgrade. IMHO money the best $40 you will spend on a '99.
