I finally sprung for a new seargent seat for my vfr. WOW. What a huge difference over the stock seat. Instant comfort, not to mention how much nicer they look. So kudos to seargent for making a great seat. For whatever it's worth, in case others research this seat, like i did before i bought it, a couple stats. I'm 5-10, 170 lbs. I was concerned about the posts from members close to my size who posted their (not so favorable) opinions on the corbin seat. Seems to me that corbin is for the, um, well, sizable rider, while the seargent is better suited for riders closer to my size. My seargent didn't need any break-in time. It was instant comfort. BUT, I do have one gripe. Seargent claims that the rear seat cowl 'fits' on their seat. Really? Really Seargent? That's not a fit. It's so tight, and distorted from its original shape, I worry about the little plastic tabs on the factory cowl breaking off. So I used my cut-off wheel and my DA with 80 grit to massage the cowl as much as possible. It still fits redicously tight, and the sides of the cowl bow out some, but at least i'm not to worried about it breaking. My point? Hey seargent, you got a great seat, but you're not quite done with your r&d on a $300+ seat.
Wow I didn't know that about those seats. Perhaps someone else here on VFRW has a solution. Good luck mate and congrats on the butt saver!
i had them redo my stock seat and to avoid that very problem i told them to leave the passenger portion of the seat alone. No problems with my cowl and i'm comfy. FYI it's SARGENT seats.
I'm 6' & 200lbs. I've had my Sargent for years. It is lightyears ahead of the stock block of concrete. Short of suspension upgrades, it's is no contest the best upgrade you can make to the VFR. KC-10 FE out... lane: :usa2:
The cowl definately fits really tight over the Sargent but I kind like it. It was a bit too loose on the stock seat IMO. Had it allmost a year now with no problems in terms of cowl breakage, had it on and off many times.
I'm 6'0 240++ with a Sargent seat. No issues what so ever on long (multiple-day, 500 miles trip) or short trips. No break in necessary. Is the seat cowl tight? Yes but it fits with no problem and the tabs don't break. I've had the cowl on and off many times. It does deform a little but it doesn't look funny.
Oops, I stand corrected. Sargent. Yeah, my back tab was almost broken when I bought the bike. My buddy is an expert collision repair wizard, and he has some ridiculous 2 part epoxy that fixed it stronger than original. The problem with my seat is the front tabs are pulled so far to hook on the seats pegs, that the middle of the cowl bows out and rubs on the grab handles. But minor thing compared to the quality of the seat over all.
I've been using the two-piece Sargent seat for a couple of years and it's been great. I chose the two-piece because it allows you, when riding solo, to leave the passenger seat home and put the rear seat cowl on. This creates a pretty good storage area, so much so, that often I find I don't need my tank bag, for one-day rides. I had Corbin seats when they first came out and the quality was good, but I'm not too sure about now. The Sargent seats are very high quality and worth every penny!
Met, Why can't the 6th gen use a two piece seat? Is it because of the high pipes tucked under the passenger seat?
I have a 07 6th gen and my seat cowl fits fine. No problems. It's more snug then the other seat but it was no where near bowing out of breaking the tabs..
I love my Sargent seat for comfort. It came with the bike when I got it, and I'm glad it did. However, I also have a gripe about it's construction. I have had several seats made for me by Corbin on other bikes. I have liked them all, but they are heavy. But at least they attach the upholstery with rivets, and not staples. The first week I got my '98 VFR, the battery died on me (as batteries often do on used bikes). It was night time, and very late after work. I needed to get the battery out so I could get it home to charge it. I wasn't too familiar with the bike and how the seat fit on and came off, so I had to fumble around a little. Next morning, when I came back with the battery, I saw small scratches on the side panel where I tried several times unsuccessfully to slide the seat on. Now, two years later I see those scratches on my otherwise pristine bike and I still get irritated. The fix was simple. Besides being careful when putting the seat on, I just put a strip of duct tape over the exposed staple heads. It's invisible from the outside. But c'mon Sargent! Couldn't you have figured out something as simple as this?
