I have noticed in rental cars that running the E85 causes worse gas mileage. I am jealous that you can run a 98 octane, but from what I have been told and know, if you have a catalytic converter on your bike (most 6th Gen's here do) then it is a complete waste of money, unless as states earlier, you have done engine work or your bike is knocking.

I have left it sit in my last several bikes without the use of StaBil or Sea Foam and come spring it pops off just as good. Actually, the last time I did use StaBil, the bike wouldn't start come springtime.

Keager, I think "foreign" octane ratings are different than US octane ratings. 100 octane here isn't necessarily the same as over seas... In Europe (and I think Australia?) they use the RON, while the US and Canada use the AKI (R+M/2).

I stand corrected then. I've been all over the US, just not the world.

Elwary is right on with Phase Separation. I spend a significant amount of time boating/fishing, and E-10 here in Jersey is the bane of my existence. What I wouldn't give to have "real" gas! Most boats these days include a fuel water separator filter, with some of them having a clear plastic/glass bottom on the filter with a screw in plug that allows you to drain the water out. Pretty handy.

As he said, the key occurrence that takes place is that after sitting for a period of time, the ethanol separates from the fuel, and it attracts moisture (hence whey its a big problem for boaters, because you're forever surrounded by moisture, in addition to normal weather changes, rain, humidity, etc.). Gas is heavier than water, so it sinks to the bottom of the tank.

I use Marine Formula Stabil in all of my engines and portable gas tanks. The Marine formula is about 4X as strong as Sta-bil's normal formula. Startron gets good reviews as well.

Here's a quick link to Stabil, but I'm sure you can Google various sites. Click on the FAQ

I've tried Startron too, but don't use it much because I've only found it is at marinas and boating supply stores. It's more of a PITA to go get when I can find StaBil just about everyplace. Does anyone know of any more convenient places to find it - maybe a chain store?

You got that backwards, Water's specific gravity is 1000 K/m3 and Gas is 737 K/m3. So the Gas is about 30% lighter and floats on the Water.
