General consensus is that you really don't want to stray from the stock size, or handling will get funky. I'm sure others can give more specific advice.

I'm running Diablo Sport Demons. Like them a lot.

    Hello Woody

I have also been searching for tires for my 87 and I have heard different things about the sport demons. More info please?

Yeah it is. Though they say to stay stock size. From what I have found there are very few options. So far I have found 3 or so

    1) Bridgestone Battlax (mehhhh)

    2) Pirelli Sport Demons (dont have a clue)

    3) I thought I saw a Continental that would fit. Not sure which model. Good luck, and let me know what you buy I am buying soon as well

    4) Michelin Pilot Activ - makes a rear tire only for these sizes. Sounds like a good option.

I have a Dunlop GT501 on the front (110/90-16) and I'll be putting a rear GT501 (130/80-18) once they get done powdercoating it this week.

When I had my '86 VF-500 I ran a 130 Metzler out back, loved 'em. No adverse handling and the extra grip sure was nice. [Stock Bridgestone's were so awful back then, like most stock tires throughout the 80s].

Been so long since I had to shop for 18" sport rubbing, I had no idea how difficult it is these days until I started this '86 GSXR-750 project, which runs 18" wheels stock. Most people end up swapping to newer style 17" GSXR wheels, but I really wanted to keep it stock as possible. Fortunately the '86/87 GSXR-1100 ran a wider 18" rear wheel, which I was able to scrounge up that will accept modern 18" radial rubber.

130/80-18 oem bias ply or 150/70-18 radial....I chose the radials....Bias is old tech that is no longer being researched and improved...I can live very commfy with the quick turn-in....

Where did you get the idea that the rear is a 110 ???

Stock rear is 130, but you can go to a 140 if you can find it.

The ULTIMATE tyre combo for the '86/'87 VFR used to be Metzler ME 33 Comp K front/ ME 1 Comp K 150 rear........but these may no longer be available. The Metzler 150 rear worked cuz it was a special size that fit nicely on the VFR wheel.

Not to beat up on the Dunlop 501 (the Dunlop factory is about 3 miles from me ), but the dry road traction is far from the best.

He has a VF not a VFR, but that is not evident in this thread. He called it the 500 in other threads.

That is the stock size for the 500. It is amazing how many people call the VF 500 a VFR....

Previous owner painted everything but the fairing and the frame which I did. It was a really good job so I believe it was done at a car body shop or at least by someone with skill and all the right equipment.

For my frame and fairing I used good quality spray cans. Primer, paint and clear coat. Prep work is 3/4 of the work though. Lot's of sanding.

The front has worked Ok so far for me, I have a cheap Taiwan tire on the back right now so I'll only be able to compare the Dunlop with that one. The front Dunlop works OK for me so far.

Willie if you want to handle stay with the original sizes or at least go to a 140wide tire

Since I've got BT45 I drag the knee every time I go outside...amazing contact patch at lean angle....but they have to be kept warm to perform...

I had gt501 before and they are excellent tires, lot of grip even with low temperature but if pushed hard in corners they do not compare to bt45!!! just a step behind Bridgestone

in conclusion: stay with original tyres if you have stock rims and setup suspensions!
