So here i my question for all you VFR guru's...as you know I have an 86vfr700. the fairings that came with it are not plastic they seem more like fiberglass , and are heavy comparitively.....So I recently aquired a set that came off of an 87... these weigh much less but are definately plastic...ie... wieght flexibility yada yada yada...now my question is this...are they both stock fairings , did Honda change that drastically on material to make the fairings? Or, one of the sets is after market... I am not sure about mine they were RWB when I got the bike and the paint all was faded the same way... or are the ones that I got recently after market? either way it doesn't matter to me, I am gonna fix all four of them just so I can have a spare set when I drop the bastard again....

One set might be ABS and the other could be Fiberglass. There should be some sort of printing on the inside of fairing to indicate material. i think the fiberglass would be aftermarket....ABS is what most of the older VFRs were made from.

I say throw both set in the attic and do what I did to my 85 vf500, retro fit new ones all together. But fatso it right, the OEM fairings where orginally plastic and the fiberglass was after market

    That option isn't for everyone.

For some people part of owning these bikes is owning a piece of history....keeping it stock looking is part of that.

I know is not for everyone I know for me I just wanted to do something different. Don't get me wrong I love the look of every stock vf/ vfr bikes and I do respect the history. There r 2 reasons I am doing this
    1. I don't have the cash to purchase a newer bike since I got this one given to me 2. All of my friends have anywhere from 01 to 10' bikes and paid thousands of dollars for and at the end of my build I'll probally only spend about 500 dollars but have a one off bike that looks just as good as there's plus it's just fun to do something no one has ever done before

I agree Danny, I am going to do some different modifications however slight to the fairings, as I finish them up for final paint.. (hopefully soon).. but I was just wondering about the differences in material used. The fiberglass ones seem more stable than the ABS ones thats for sure. But the ABS were much easier to fix being plastic and all they melted a hell of a lot easier....

BTW Danny, nice looking mod with the CBR (?) fairings...

Stock fairings are ABS, should melt easily. The aftermarket options I've seen are all fiberglass. The ABS is pretty light, but my 24yo fairings feel pretty brittle. They flex some, but they cracked pretty easily when the bike went down.
