i am currently rebuilding a 86 vf500 and i tried installing a inline fuel filter but i am having trouble getting the fuel to go through. I would like to to put one since i had the carbs cleaned at my local dealer which ended up being costly but in the end very necessary.I got the bike partially disassembled and from what i can figure out it did not have one as factory equipment,am i right or not i don't know and now i'm wonderig if i should throw the filter away if it is going to give me fuel problems.Hoping somebody can tell my what i should do to save me some headache.

Yea. 86 doesn't come with a Fuel Filter.

I installed 2 of my own. No issues as of yet.

So did you end up doing the filters in-line after the 'y'? I'm in the same spot, needing an in-line setup.

I keep forgetting to ask about the filters at Honda when I go there. I'll try and find out and then let everyone who has asked me know....then maybe make a thread or something.

I already chopped up the 's' curved piece of line trying to get a filter in line right out of the tank... but I can't get the DAMN thing to fit right...

i put the filters after the "y".Had trouble finding filters that would fit ended up putting some from polaris 700 sportsman. Coaz4x4 i initially tried to put a filter in that s pipe and there simply is not enough room without kinking something. As for finding filters from Honda all i could find were paper filters which don't work.

My local dealers carry them, so you shouldn't have any trouble. One thing I am wondering about is whether putting it before the Y might reduce the flow too much. They are pretty small diameter. After the Y makes more sense to me, but this is just speculation.

I kept wondering what you guys were talking about with the "Y" and all, then I remembered the 86 has 2 inlets on the carbs. I wonder how much of a difference does it really make having dual inlets?

The filter I was going to use before the 'y' was pretty big on the inlet and outlet sides... I was confident with the flow, but the fittment was the catch.

So really when shopping for those filters I'm just looking for that cone style, right?

Also, looking at the mod for the petcock vacuum to make it not a part of the system (Daugherty webpage) anyone know the size of the hardware I'll need to plug the vacuum port from the carb?

You don't need to plug it. You just cut a short piece and loop it over to the breather on the petcock. Pretty sure his directions describe this. Just be very sure to ALWAYS turn your petcock off when not running the bike in case a float jams.

On the other end, at the carb it needs to be plugged.

You need a 5mm screw with a washer. You can get it from you dealer or bring one off of one of the other three heads to a good fastener shop to have one matched up.

Mines got a screen type in tank before Petcock valve. ....I know this is old, but likely to come up again. I stumbled on it right off the bat....

If your tank is clean then I question the need for these filters. Seems a lot of trouble for little benefit. The petcock itself has a plastic tube which is a pretty fine mesh so that will stop any big chunks getting down the line. The flow on VF500s seem marginal whichever year you are talking about so any obstruction in the line is probably not ideal.
