+1 0n the wearing the gear. Tell your friends to piss off! A 23yr old died from blunt force trauma this past Thurs nite. Decided not to wear his helmet cause it was too hot. SUV took him out.

well i got a chance to look at the bike today. The fairing on the left is toast, the windshield popped out and broke, the left mirror it gone, the instrument cluster is broken, the left handlebar broke the locking tab and is dented into the tank, scuffed the front fender, and the left foot peg is broken off.

I had the cortech luggage and it scuffed the nylon a bit but there was no damage to the rear of the bike at all.

I guess it could be worse. looks fixable at least.

1st and foremost glad to hear you are alright. I would like to personally Thank you for helping keep my head out of my @$$. It is in the 90's this week and the temptation to ride without a jacket is great, but after reading of your experience I will stay in the ATGATT family. BTW I just turned 1200 miles on my '07 RWB. Hopefully you will be back on the road shortly.

Glad to hear you are ok! I live in southern CT, and we have our share of 80+ degree days. How many times I've been tempted to ride without some gear, and I almost did. Like the earlier post, thanks for pulling my head out of my @##. I'm waiting for a new textile jacket to come in, and have been using my old Hein Gericke (yup!) leather jacket - way heavy and hot, but.....

    Hope you heal soon.

Well guys, Honda of Tulsa just called me with my "estimate". $7,800!!! Seriously I am in shock. I paid less than that for the bike! I know stuff is expensive, but it was a 30 mph slide on the left side. I didn't even "hit" anything except the pavement. Looks like they are talking about 12 hours labor. In reviewing the estimate they have every screw, washer, bolt etc.. on the estimate.

Man what a mess. My insurance claim lady said not to worry about it, they would send their own person out to estimate the bike.

Well, your are right. I guess I shouldn't be upset. I just didn't want to go through the hoops of buying a new one, (getting the wife to agree to that after this accident) and buying a new tag, insurance and such. It would be much easier just to pick up my repaired bike.

I have pictures but it was in a dark wrecker shop and there wasn't much room, but I will get them off my phone tonight and post them.

Glad to hear you have the jacket coming, I found mine cool even in the heat. I would sweat just enough in it to act as an air conditioner while moving.

I am thankful I am not damaged any worse than I am.

Be aware that the insurance will try and cut corners at every turn in rebuilding the bike. They will try and fix damaged parts instead of replacing and if they can find a cheap alternative to an OEM part they'll use it. It's better to let them total the bike and buy it back; do the work yourself. If you know you're going to keep the bike forever then the salvage title will mean nothing. I just went through this with my 2005 bike. the only reason i didn't buy it back was because the frame was damaged (warped, melted). Try not to let the emotion of the moment guide you thoughts. I know it's hard because it just happened but take your time about making your decision. Trust me i know what you're going through...

Thanks, I appreciate that. And I agree, I don't want "repro" parts on a bike a month old and with 1,100 miles on it. I will say though in looking at the estimate, they have listed a right handle bar, it never went down on the right and that one was fine when I looked at the bike at the wrecker service. They also listed every screw, bolt and washer. Seriously, I have no problem with replacing screws and bolts that need to be replaced, but come on, reuse the bolts on the faring or the ones holding the tank on. I don't honestly think they are going to really order and replace those with new ones, do you?

As far as buying the bike back and fixing it, I don't have the time or the place to do that. It's a nice thought, but it would be one of those situations where it would sit there 5 years with me saying "I sure need to get out there and ...." if you know what I mean. At my age and time I have available, I find more enjoyment using products than building them. LOL

I too am glad you are OK; and obviously I appreciate your pain...

My bike is at a dealership far away, and won't get looked at until next week, cause they're too busy... So I wait.

I have always worn a jacket & gloves but would only slip some jeans on over my slacks & sport my dress shoes to work. That is UNTIL some jack ass cut me off & I bounced off the wall on the 710. Since then I upgraded to Alpinestar MX2 boot & Icon Victory jeans. There are a ton of threads about how well gear works and I never understand when I see those young punks wearing short & a tanktop with their girl on the back in a mini skirt & flipflops.

It's not "if" I go down, it's "when". Ride long enough and the laws of probability will catch up to us all. Glad u r ok dude. get well & get back on the horse soon.

Glad your OK Gary, guess it has to be under the shit happens category. Pride heals slowly even when you know it couldn’t be helped. You could accept the insurance settlement and negotiate with the dealer, that is if he really wants the work. Don’t know about where you are but the economy sucks here and most dealers aren’t so busy they could afford to let you go somewhere else. I would trailer my bike to another city and I would tell them so.
Would your wife entertain the idea of getting her own bike? Mine wants one now, seems she thinks she is going to fall off the back of my bike! Not sure how much life insurance I can afford!! LOL.

I actually called the dealer I bought the bike from and they said that quote sounds about right. I'll just wait and see what the insurance says next week.

You know, my wife did mention wanting to ride.. but not after this, it changed her whole perspective on things. you know, having been a deputy and having been shot at, I can't imagine that stopping me from doing that job. But I guess some people are just wired differently.

Okay, here are the pictures I took. they are poor quality because: I had no room; it was dark; i was in a hurry; and they were blurry because my shoulder kept popping in and out of place while I was trying to bend down and get a picture. Sorry

Let us know what they say about yours. Maybe we can take both and make one bike!

I am sorry for your mishap as well. I cant even describe how I feel. I was really attached to mine even only after a month. It brought back my memories of my 85 & 86 interceptors. It was everything I wanted, and honestly I can't think of any other bike I would have traded it for.

If it wasn't for the VFR / Interceptor line-up, then I don't think I'd own a street bike. There is no other model that interests me.

Now it's the dreaded insurance time. The adjuster for progressive looked at the bike today and called me with his estimate. Honda of Tulsa says $7,800 and Progressive says $7,300.

So the adjuster said they will pay me $6,850.43 for the motorcycle including the tank bra and soft luggage. I currently own $7,553.89. He said his number was based on what the bikes were "selling for". I honestly haven't seen any used ones less than the $7,000 around here at minimum. he said if I have names and numbers of other sellers they will call them and ask them their "bottom dollar" and base the payout on that.

Anybody have any experience with this? Anybody have any experience with progressive? Do I have to accept what they want to pay? I'm not trying to get anything I don't deserve, but the bike is a month old and I honestly think they should give me payoff. It's not like I traded and was upside down or anything. Am I asking too much to try and get them to value the bike at the $7,553.89? I do have a $1,000 deductible, so I have no problem with that.

The way it looks is they are going to try and stick me with the $703.46 difference + the $150.00 estimate time + $25.00 shop supplies + the $338.00 wrecker bill.

    Any advice?

Well, I have State Farm, so we'll see if my experience is any different next week... Basically though, there is a type of additional coverage you can get, called "gap insurance", it's usually an additional charge a month, quarter, bi-annual or annual, however you pay your insurance. But, the basic point is that it covers the "gap" between whatever the bike is valued at, and what your payout needs to be to close your loan out. Without this type of coverage, I would be surprised if you get any closer.

If I understand your math correctly, and you owed $75xx, with a $1000 deductible, and they offered you $65xx, you actually would get close to what you're looking for, since with your deductible, you're actually totaling what you're looking for ($75xx-$1000=$65xx). Now, I know there were other expenses, so you're over that amount, but, they are offering $68xx, so you're actually +$300 or so (not that $300 covers everything...).

I don't know, from what I know of insurance, I think you're looking OK. Having said that, don't do anything quickly, think about it, maybe call some folks you know, see what people have to say on here, etc. then make a decision. There is nothing wrong with haggling though, and I would (and will with mine) be trying to ensure they payout as much possible, since they've been making a lot more on me then they're gonna pay out.

Something else I leaned about insurance; make sure you have some medical coverage on your bike insurance, because often normal medical insurance thru your employer WILL NOT cover medical expenses from a MC crash...

That's about the max I know... Hope it helps.
