The kicker for me was the DCT option...all the performance of the true standard, without the hassles (for me), and the bike's ability to shift faster and smoother than most (all ?) of us.

When I inquired (half seriously) at my local Powerhouse dealer early this week, there were only 3 DCT's available in Canada. A day later there was only 1. The day after that, I obliterated my discretionary income.

T-minus 6 days to estimated arrival...

This can't possibly be true. Everyone knows that everyone here except perhaps yourself is as quick on the shifter and clutch as ___________. (fill in the blank with a famous racer; even someone no one has ever heard of, excluding blood relatives)

IMO, an auto tranny on a bike will never work. It never has on cars and there is no reason for me to think otherwise. Probably makes the bike get lousy mileage too..;)

Well (appropriate lip smacking sound) I sure hope Honda never starts putting those damn slush boxes on thier racecars and lawnmowers. Bunch of shiftless skunks IMO.

I think sometimes some of these dudes are wasted. At least they are not out riding and taking pot shots at Honda lawnmowers.

I voted that would not consider buying a new VFR mainly because it's too expensive. Also, Honda is a victim of its own success because my 91 is still running fine with 100K+. It's expensive enough just keeping tires on mine! When the time comes, I won't be looking for a bike that big anyway. I'm also much more likely to buy used, taking advantage of the steep value drop on new Japanese bikes.

A healthy market for used is what keeps the prices up on new equipment. New Harleys couldn't sell for the ridiculous price they get if people weren't willing to buy a used one for more than a new Jap import.

I'd say the Jap bike holds it's value pretty well when a new gen three sold for $7k and can still bring 40% of that today in good condition.

Point being - I'd debate your use of "steep value drop"

    I voted NO.
    Reasons:
    1. Price
    2. looks too big
    3. I Love my 94
    4. If I were to drop that kind of cash it will be on an RC30

right - cuz all the fastest dragsters use manual transmissions and clutches.

I don't have much respect for dragsters anyways, there is no talent in just going strait as fast as you can for a few seconds. Long as you have the cash (parts, tuning/engineering, and labor); you slam on the gas and keep the car/bike strait you're gold :p I'm a circuit and auto x man myself.

VFR wasn't designed to be a drag bike and if you bought a motorcycle to just drag race well.. you're as red neck and boring as they come.. just my opinion. :)

Back to the 1200, I know some people said that looks doesn't matter because you'll be a blur but seriously do you plan on speeding everywhere? Riding through a town or just cruising some people are going to look at your bike as they pass or you pass them. They'll also notice your bike when its parked, and if they are a bike fan they'll wander on over to look at it. Then I'm a personal fan of taking photos with my bike in it of senic views.. Most of us agree that the 1200 is ugly.. reason I bought the VFR is for reliability, looks, abs, and the V4. While the 800 is slower then the 1200 its far more agressive looking in my opinion with its dual headlights, aerodynamic looks and twin exhaust. My 6 gen is plenty fast for me and does everything I need it to..
I also prefer manual transmissions in any vehicle, the only time I hate manual transmission is in stop and go traffic. Manual is less boring, you feel more in control, and you can use your engine to slow down. I don't do burn outs but an intentional burnout in an auto tranny probably leads to disaster.

regardless of your opinion about the sport - dragsters have proven that auto trannies are faster. Also - just like the VFR - these guys are using shift points and manually shifting where and when they want. The difference is in the clutch lever. I believe you can use automatic shifting if you would like to use your left hand to scratch your nuts or answer your cell phone.

Diesel 1 ton dually pickups use auto transmissions for hauling huge trailers over the mountains. I think we have the technology to build durable transmissions so burnouts shouldn't be a concern. Actually, you could debate that clutch packs are less prone to severe damage than gears. Shear a tooth off a gear and you've damaged the whole gear set. I don't even know what technology Honda used in their DCT transmission but I'm sure your concerns are moot.
