    All you non-Cali riders... Does your state's DMV make you pay taxes each time you buy a vehicle new or used? In CA, they take their pound of flesh based on purchase price each time the vehicle is sold then registered. I'm not quite sure it's lawful, but I can't seem to find a court case to support my theory yet.

    Louisiana makes you pay blue book valve on any vehicle during registration. Every time you buy a vehicle new or used. Unless you have a bill of sale and even then its debatable. Like you cant have a BOS saying you bought a 2007 Interceptor for $10.00, they will use the blue book instead to get more taxes out of you.

    Even if the vehicle is damaged? That doesn't seem hardly fair, just like having to be taxed on the same item more than once.

    Not if you already own it. Only if you are buying it from someone else. Then you would have to repair it. Get it inspected and insured. Then go and get it registered and pay the taxes and fees, etc...

    Try Alabama, where not only do they nail for BB value, the current owner has to pay any tag/registration fees the previous owner hadn't, even if the vehicle was not operational during the time.

    Most likely becasue driving is a privledge and not a right. Therefore, the rule of law can be a bit wacky with vehicle registartion and rules governing it.

    Seriously? That's a new one.

    You get off pretty easy here in Delaware. Nothing like that at all with the previous owner.

    Hopefully someone from Virginia will pipe up; they have this "vehicle tax" they have to pay every year! It is one of the goofiest and costly fees I ever seen.

    in Connecticut you pay tax on purchase price of vehicle, but if it's suspiciously low, then it's the high-end of the blue book value. Then, depending on what town your in, you pay vehicle taxes based on a mille rate, which makes no sense to me still. Until recently, NYS DMV did the same with paying purchase price tax at registration time, there was no tax afterward, but since NYS is near broke they now tax the vehicle annually. If you live near public mass transit area, you get hit up for a flat rate tax on the vehicle and the money is used to subsidize the always-in-the-red public train system.

    It annoys me to no end that sales tax added to any monetary transaction, primarily because the money being used has already been taxed. Motor vehicles are even worse, since taxes are paid every time they are sold, taxes are paid on fuel, tires and all consumables, etc.

    Sonoma County in California is considering adding an additional fee to vehicle registration. The money will be used to fix potholes and save the world, etc. No mention is EVER made of all the money that has already been collected for such purposes and has been pissed away on something else.

    FWIW, I don't believe any politicians (or their staff) have been laid off recently. They do say that they feel bad about having to screw us more than they have in the past, though.

    I'll stop now before my blood pressure goes up...

    I don't think this is true; I just renewed my registration (April) here in NY and only paid registration - no taxes reassessed. Maybe a vicious rumor you've heard?

    Well, as a couple of old British sots sang long ago...

    One, two, three, four...
    Hrmm!
    One, two, (one, two, three, four!)

    Let me tell you how it will be;
    There's one for you, nineteen for me.
    'Cause I’m the taxman,
    Yeah, I’m the taxman.

    Should five per cent appear too small,
    Be thankful I don't take it all.
    'Cause I’m the taxman,
    Yeah, I’m the taxman.

    (if you drive a car, car;) - I’ll tax the street;
    (if you try to sit, sit;) - I’ll tax your seat;
    (if you get too cold, cold;) - I’ll tax the heat;
    (if you take a walk, walk;) - I'll tax your feet.

    Taxman!

    'Cause I’m the taxman,
    Yeah, I’m the taxman.

    Don't ask me what I want it for, (ah-ah, mister Wilson)
    If you don't want to pay some more. (ah-ah, mister heath)
    'Cause I’m the taxman,
    Yeah, I’m the taxman.

    Now my advice for those who die, (taxman)
    Declare the pennies on your eyes. (taxman)
    'Cause I’m the taxman,
    Yeah, I’m the taxman.

    And you're working for no one but me.

    Taxman!

    I'm seriously considering packing up the truck, and moving out of Beverly in the SRC that is (Socialists Republic of California,) but not sure where I want to go that I can ride 8-9 mos out of the year and support the family. I like what AZ is doing by telling the Fed if you don't do your job, we'll do it for you. NV & TX were other considerations. I don't think we've heard from any members from those states on this thread yet. I will say though, that I don't "drive" my bike, I ride my bike while (freely for now) traveling along the public roads. Tax this CA! :flip:

    Alabama also has the "Road Maintenance Fee" that's based on a vehicle's BB value, not the actual tonnage of rubber on asphalt. With this, a 500 pound '05 VFR has a higher RMF than a 2,500 pound '88 Caprice that doesn't need LowJack because it leaves an oil track!

    That is why you have to be careful when buying a used vehicle. Do not buy it if the current fees have not been paid, UNLESS the price takes into account all the fees that are owed on the used vehicle.

    Current fees I have no problem with, what burns me up are the fees I was forced to pay for the 3 years the bike was not registered by the PO because it was not operational, especially when it's a loophole in the law that let's them do it. Icing on the cake is DMV's "that's your problem" attitude...

    It now costs $18 a year to register a bike in California as "non-op". I seem to remember it not costing anything in the past.

    Arnold Swartzenagger wants to balance the budget before he goes out of office.
    Then he will brag that he did not raise taxes and he balanced the budget.
    All the people that got screwed will get to say nothing.

    Yes I understand....It costs $18.00 per year to NOT OPERATE THE VEHICLE.
    But they will pay you to destroy a vehicle as long as they get to do it.

    When people just put a vehicle in their yard and it sits and is not used it ruins the vehicle.
    Then if they do not get a certificate of non operation, the full yearly fees will have to eventually be paid. So no one will want to buy the vehicle if full past registration fees are owed.

    So please people ....if a vehicle is not working and you do not plan to fix it - GET THE CERTIFICATE OF NON OPERATION and save yourself some money and it will be possible to sell that used vehicle.
