I am looking to get a bike to drive to work scince my car only gets 22 mpg plus bikes are more fun. I would like to get a sports bike but I also want a good road bike and then i found a 99 vfr800 with about 18,000 miles for $3500 but I think I can talk him down to $3000 think its a good deal?

Don't buy a bike thinking you are going to save money.

By the time you get proper training and gear to protect your life, you won't be saving anything.

No doubt you will have lots of fun though. That sounds to be about the going price. Anything over $3500 would be too much IMO. Under $3000 would be a screamin deal.

I already know how to ride and I have a helmet so all I need is a jacket

then you start riding every day and you decide you want a different helmet. Jacket's not warm/cool enough so you need another one. Suddenly you can't haul enough stuff and you need a tank bag. The list goes on.

Just saying, don't justify a bike purchase by saying you are going to save money over a cage - cuz it aint gonna happin. Guaranteed.

If you haven't taken a real class, I would highly recommend it. I "knew how to ride" too but still learned beneficial things in a structured class. I don't think you can find anyone who took a class that said it was a waste of time and money.

I don't think there are any classes around here and I can't take the time off work. Plus it's not just about the money.

I had the same problem and had to take a weekend class. They condensed it into two days. Like I said, ultra valuable. A basic class is more than just balancing and shifting.

Do a search for MSF motorcycle class or Abate motorcycle class in your state or city. Never know, it could save your life. :soapbox: done

If I was trying to justify a bike purchase to the wife, I'd tell her it was to save money! :) Just know in reality, there couldn't be anything further than the truth.

Consider this, if your bike gets 45mpg and your cage gets 22mpg. how much gas will the $3000 purchase price buy in your cage (before registration and must have additions to your gear).

Just for fun. $3000 purchase price. Estimate $100 for registration. $500 for insurance. $500 for gear you haven't realized you want/need.

    $4100 to get rolling.

$4100 divided by estimate $2.75 fuel = 1,491 gallons of fuel.

That's 32,802 commuting miles at 22mpg you'd have to eliminate in your cage before breaking even on the purchase of your bike. And if you didn't do that in the first year then the equation gets more complicated because you have to pay up on insurance again. I don't count maintenance because you're trading that with the cage. However, you'll do more joy-riding and recreational miles which will increase your maintenance costs.

One other thing. How old is your gear? If it's over 5 yeas old I'd recommend getting new, or at least last years model. Definitely don't buy used gear though. +1 on the MSF course. You can google MSF and I'm sure that there is some local college that may be teaching it, or even a state police station. If you haven't ridden in a while then it's well worth the time and money. Check out Craigslist in your area for some deals. There is always someone selling a VFR, I don't know why, but I'm biased. Good luck.

It is beyond true that bikes DO NOT save any cash over a cage. Yes, bikes get 2-5 times the MPG but that's where the savings end. Gear is indeed expensive. Training can be expensive but in the end, $350 bucks is a drop in the bucket in the long run. Tires on a car last 30000-75000 miles & usually cost no more than $800 a set. Tires on a sport bike are at least $200 a set & will normally last only 6000. Buy the bike. I wouldn't be able to sleep at night without a bike in the garage. Just don't purchase one thinking you can save money.

$3000 is a fair price for a 5th Gen with 18000 miles on it.

    KC-10 FE out...

Lets see, what was your question, I want to get a bike to ride to work because it's "more fun" & is this a good deal on this '99.

Before we answer we'll need to examine your monthly household budget, your retirement savings and allocation, any foreign investments, what data plan do you have with your cell phone, how long have you been riding, please list all the bikes you've ever owned, how long owned, total mileage by bike and season, and we'll need maintenance records for all vehicles. There is quite an extensive mandatory survey, please go to www.onmyhighhorse.com to complete it.

The short answer, if it's in good shape $3K sounds like a decent deal and yes, the '99 has a ton of the 'fun' factor compared to a car or a lot of other bikes. Go for it.

you cannot justify motorcycle ownership for cutting commuting costs, things just won't add up - ownership is priceless! Dude, just buy the effing bike and have a blast!
