I am looking to buy a spanner (or a kit which contains a spanner) for my boyfriend's '97 VFR. I've been looking on-line and there are a slew of different types. Does anyone know which type is best and where is best to purchase it?

    Thanks for the suggestions/info.

    Yes there are. Too many.

Price and quality, place of manufacture all play parts.

There will be strories about using the same tools the Ferrari Race Team uses. (shameless plug here..Griots Garage.. Snap On. US made. Great tools but really made the professional. For great quality and a dynamite guarantee. Sears Craftsman.

For the budget minded, try Harbor Freight Tools - Quality Tools at the Lowest Prices whole sets of metric tools for not too much money including spanners both adjustable, metric and US measure.

NO tools from Taiwan or China if quality is important.

For tools I plan to keep for the rest of my life I buy Craftsman. I buy impact sockets (not wobblies or anything special) from Harbor Freight. I've got a mechanic friend that's been using the HF impact stuff for years and never broken a socket. If you need special wobblies buy the good ones. If I know I'm going to beat it up, possibly break it, or want to use it in a tool kit for a vehicle I go to a pawn shop and buy whatever is the cheapest (usually foreign crap).

Costco has in the larger stores tools made where all those little brown dudes with the squinty eyes live. We must be careful about sending them too many of our beloved Bud cans cause the next thing the sneaky varmints will do is start making motorcycles that look like Harleys and this whole country will go down the shithole.

My toolbox is a mix of Snap-on, Mac, Craftsman, Proto, Mastercraft (Canadian Tire in Canada), Westward (Acklands-Grainger, or just Grainger in the US) and Princess Auto. Princess Auto is the CAnadian version of Harbor Freight. My wife works there, so I get some good deals. Not all of PA's tools are good, some are just complete junk. If you are choosy and wise though, you can find some good ones. How much you use a certain tool can also dictate how much to spend. Once in a blue moon, you can cheap out. If it gets a lot of use, buy good stuff. For Vise Grips, only the original will do (now owned by Irwin). For pliers, it's channel lock or Klein. Screwdrivers are expendable, so constantly buying them. Philips wear out, and then they screw your screw heads (ha ha I said screw twice in the same sentence) Slotted drivers are glorified prybars, therefore get abused. I don't make my living with my tools, but I hate using cheap junk that breaks at the most inopportune moment. Buy 1 good one instead of 3 cheap ones.

Our heartfelt sympathies for our friends in the great frozen North who must relly on not only a mishmash of tools in a cardboard box and also having to live on a diet of LaBatts, mooseflank and oatmeal.

    Check out this dude's tools..

Labatt's is way better than that watery stuff you guys call beer, and moose done on the smoker is delicious. I sold my cardboard box to some yankee and bought a nice Beach rollcab.

Spanner? Are you from across the pond? If your an American chick and your bf knows quality go online to Mac Tools or Matco and get an 8-19 mm set of combination wrenches. If he is just a regular guy go to your local Sears and get him the polished set of Professional wrenches in the same size if you wana cheap out you could get him the garden variety ones from Sears for less money. You could also go on the tool truck of another manufacturer and get a set too. Maybe Snap On/

Dissing Bud Light is well, Un American. Last moose I saw, got instant right of way. Them sumbitches are big!

The little secret is that the dude with the pricy tools also sells all sorts of stuff to make things shiny and squeaky clean. He buys in bulk from well known manufacturers and puts the stuff in his own bottles. Bud would do well to do the same with LaBatts IMO ;)
