Is there any way to make a Staintune exhaust louder(the plug appears to be out i can see down pipe and hole is empty on tip of exhaust). If not I may think about trading or selling any ideas for what its worth or offers. I want something that can be easily gutted to be loud. The exhaust is on a 2003 VFR800
Yes there is one way to make the bike louder - remove the can completely! Seriously, if you want the unadulterated roar that comes with an open Staintune on a good VFR, you need the non cat exhaust. The catalyser helps mute the sound before it passes to the exhaust. My 99 model has no cat and an open Staintune low pipe - I would not wish the thing any louder, I can just get by around town by keeping it off the throttle, but when on the open roads, this thing just roars.
Where did u get ur exhaust. I found one that was $1000. I had idea to take it to a muffler shop and have itcut out and fitted with straight pipes. Also what do u mean by "open pipe." I have the plugs out of mine, but is there a way to take baffle out.
Are you sure you are talking of a Staintune? There is no "baffle' in a Staintune pipe. Only the removable exhaust plug which is about 2"- 3" long and fits in the end. The rest of the sound absorbtion is done by the stainless mesh around the perimeter of the can. You have the 6th gen which requires 2 x cans, hence the $1000 price tag. With 2 cans you have even more sound absorbtion, meaning your bike will be quieter than a single pipe VFR. However the 2 pipes probably give more power. The best silenced systems have large mufflers as this reduces the sound without loss of power. I got my Staintune from the factory - I live only 5 miles from it.
Ok, lets ride somewhere someday! Illawarra riders are a great crowd if you want to check out their site.
When i say "baffle" i mean the sound abosorbtion. Now back to the catless headers. Where did you get yours and do you know if they make them for 6th gen, i thought ive seen them for a grand.
Sorry, I misunderstood your earlier post. I believe all 98 & 99 models came without the cat, except for those in Euro or California markets. After 2000 all models with cat. No idea where you can get 6th gen straight through headers, I know you can get new headers for 5th gen on E bay for around $300. I think they are China made pipes.
greeting Capt. I have a Y2k & lust after a Staintune. the website lists 98-2001 high mount as the same part number. do you know if this will work? 2000 - 01 have a cat; 98 - 99 don't. i would expect the mid pipe to be different......? BTW....at 5 miles to the factory, you could open up a distribution center! TIA. bob
Bob, The outlet position is the same for cat or non cat headers, so same pipe fits both types. Yes if ever the aus $ goes back to being worth just 55c of you money (as it was in 2000) I will start exporting staintunes and undercut the factory deals!
