I would like to thank all the members for being as tolerant as they are.
I have been on the forum for a while now and members always answer my questions and let me
participate even though my bike is not a sport bike. Thanks!

Just want to say thanks to all the members.

+1. That thing rocks. I am a noobie so I have never seen someone make their own motorcycle before. I havent had much to offer in the tech support section, but I am a fan.

In my experience the VFR rider and the VFR world members are a unique breed. Open minded, mature and for the most part very experienced riders who respect and value the input of other like minded individuals.

I think this is the most helpful bunch of folks on the web who genuinely care for other riders regardless of their chosen breed.

I for one would love to see some detailed pictures of your build Don!

Today I went to the DMV to register my chopper.

    The clerk was very nice.
What I learned was that when you fill out the papers that you need receipts and some of my receipts were Ebay and online purchaces and those
did not get taxed. So now they want to tax me for those.
So it is better to pay the takes up front. I think Meg Whitman of Ebay should be collecting taxes and paying them to the state, since she runs the business.

Anyway I am going back to show that I have paid $250.00 of the $1000 dollars they asked me for of the total taxes.
I have $250.00 receipts of items paid for.

So when a business does NOT charge you taxes YOUR STATE my ask you for them.

    A WEEK LATER....
I go back to the DMV to deal with the taxes.
The clerk (a different one), says that my transaction is TAX EXEMPT and then she says. "do you have the receipt for the engine" and she looks at it and I start to say something and she says, doesn't matter, it is tax exempt and tells me the next step is to have them inspect the vehicle. So day after tomorrow I take the bike for inspection.

    I am very HAPPY!!!!!!

What are they doing about a VIN number? Do they want an inspection and/or is this being registered as a special/custom build?

The DMV clerk said I would be exempt from the CHP inspection (special construction) and that when I return to show how many receipts I
have for taxes that ARE paid, I am supposed to bring the bike and the DMV officer gives me the VIN number and looks at the bike.
They gave me a 30 day time to do that. The temporary registration has no VIN number on it yet.
So it is officially registered today and I have insurance on the bike.

I drove it into the town I live in and that was like a two mile ride. Got a feel for how the bike handles etc.,.
Got to wind it out in most of the gears.

Disagree - if fleabay charged taxes then I'd have had to pay tax for all the items I bought just to maintain or upgrade my bikes. None of which had anything to do with getting a registration. fleabay facilitates a garage sale in many cases from private party to private party - should you start paying taxes to the state for the crap you sell to your neighbors out of your garage?

The DMV is as corrupt as the rest of government. Somehow in the early to mid 1900's we had tons of money to build the most elaborate highway and roads of any country. Now with rising gas taxes, rising vehicle registration fees, and more drivers on the road than at any other time in history, we don't even have the money to maintain them? The DMV can kiss my f'n ass.

P.S. that's also what you get for living in Comifornia. I registered a homebuilt trailer in Wisconsin and they didn't care to see any receipts for my axles etc...

Yes, technically, under Federal tax code, you should be reporting that as income and paying taxes.

I just reported what happened at the DMV not how I felt about it.
The clerk was nice to me . She gave me 30 days to find the receipts that I HAD paid taxes on.

As far as the state charging taxes on things bought at a flea market I feel that is wrong too.
The taxes were paid when the item was first purchased. But now they have a new term for flea market items and
it is called being a "reseller" and if that can be justified then maybe there should be a nation wide tax rate for all states
that is less than when the item was first purchased. A lower rate for "resold" items.

Anyway I have to do what my DMV wants, or I cannot get my motorcycle registered.
The whole concept of flea market buying and selling is a nightmare for a government because it is not part of the COWBOY ECONOMY.
The /COWBOY ECONOMY is what you have when many products are manufactured ,designed to fail, and thrown out and a new item must be purchased.

In a GREEN economy things would be well made ,repairable and be able to have a long lifespan.
Thats what people say they want is to save the earths resources but the government needs to get behind that.
Businesses do not like that. We need more REPAIR BUSINESSES.
Imagine if you could go into a place as big as Home Depot and have a repair made while you wait or drop it off or buy used lumber that has been cleaned up or other things.

My first computer was a Macintosh and it lasted 18 years. Very green.
IBM style computers only last a couple years.
The dumps are stacked with IBM style computers. NOT GREEN at all.
I only was forced to get a new one because of the internet.
All of my programs worked perfectly. It was when Youtube and others were rolled out that
my computer could not keep up, and I was forced to buy another computer.

As long as there is a PC gaming community, there will always be computers and computer parts at the dumps. Many hard core gamers go through several upgrades a year sometimes on the same type of hardware. :/ Building a PC though can be like building your bike, you can make it to last or you can make it fast with low life expectancy (due to future upgrading, overclocking experiments, etc). In a way its kinda like building something for the track.. lol VFR is like a Mac and Aprilla is like a PC
Anyways yes I want see pics too :O Hopefully its not this bike..

I will try to post build photos in two parts.
    Ok....would not work.
    OK..plan #2 single photos.
The first thing I had to do was to build a tubing bender.
The second year I started by buying an engine from a motorcycle junk
yard based on its looks and ordering tubing to bend.
    [IMG][IMG]
I had to put my frame fixture together and build a table to work on.
I had to visualize the frame and how I wanted the bike to look.
I was working with 1948 H-D rigid frame plans which allowed me a 240 rear wheel and options on the frame.
I decided on 42º for the neck rake. I did NOT want to go to the 49º extreme neck.
    I wanted it somewhat rideable.
More tubes being added each day.
I had to think about all the small parts the needed to be welded to the frame like the
ignition switch, coils, radiator, and fusebox etc.,.
Because once the frame was taken apart to be painted attachment of small parts would not be mounted by welding.

    More tomorrow.... to be continued...

Ok .. a few more before bed time.
Tomorrow there will be more also.
    Getting the engine/chain/frame all aligned.
Rear wheel and brake reaction tab.
Working on the exhaust. I did not know at that time that I was going to be redoing
the exhaust system at least 5 times !!! exhausting!!
Finally the frame can be released from the fixture and final welds can now be gotten to.

    More tomorrow.
