I've been all over this forum and have found a lot of threads on wheel swaps for everything but a vf1000r. I have a 1985
vf1000r and I would like to know the best way to go about making a wheel swap. What wheels are best to use, not looking for a lot of machining would like to find the easiest way to put a matching set of wheels on this bike so I can get a better tire selection. I don't mean to sound like a broken recorded on here but I don't know if the set up on a vf750 or a vf500. So before i start buying stuff I could really use some advise form some one with some experacne on this matter. Once again looking for the easiest wheel swap with the best out come. Thanks to all that takes the time to inform me on this matter!!!!!

You can go with a CBR F2/F3 front swap. Jamie(he'll be along shortly) can set you up with spacers if you're not able to make your own. You will loose the speedo drive if you use an F3 front though. An F2 rear is easy. Again Jamie has spacers and a caliper solution for that as well. Some have put CBR900RR rears on but that will take some shimming of the front sprocket as well. VFRcapn did a nice job on his R with the 900 rear. I did the F2 swap and it made a huge difference. I did something a little different for the rear caliper. Bike handled great with good rubber. Of course you can swap swing arms and forks to open up other wheel choices but the F2 swap is the best bang for the buck!!

The F2 caliper and bracket must be used, the VF1000R part will not. This is because the R's caliper has two opposing pistons which puts one piston on the inside of the rotor. That makes the caliper extra big on that side and it interferes with the F2 wheel's center hub. The kit that I make works in conjunction with the F2 caliper and bracket.

You will need the F2 wheel, sprocket carrier, rear caliper and caliper bracket. The wheel itself does not need machined, just the sprocket carrier, so shipping should not be an issue. Shoot me a call or e-mail if you need more details.

You'll need to send me the CBR600 sprocket carrier and the VF's speedometer drive gear. I'll take care of the rest. Shoot me an e-mail when you get a chance. Thanks!

Jamie, I was wondering if you had ever mounted up a F3 wheel? The carriers look to be the same with the F2 wheel. Do you know if they widened the wheel hub or just the rim hoop with the F3? The F3 lists a 160 tire like the F2 but I assume that being a 5" rim it would take a 170 tire like the 4th gen VFR?

Absolutely. On the large frame VF's (everything except the 500) the wheel fits just like the F2. There are no changes to the spacers or anything. Besides the hoop width they are dimensionally identical. You can only run a 160 tire though as a 170 would be too wide.

I suggest sticking with an F2 part. The F3 wheels have thinner walls which makes them lighter but much more prone to bending. You might have problems with the big 600lb beast bending the F3 wheel. No worries with an F2 part - I've yet to hear of anyone bending one of those.
