I'm not local to where I store my '84 and need to confirm the mounting hole spacing - metric dimensions please - on a stock VF500F coil.

Would someone happen to have one of these fellas on the workbench or in the parts bin for a quick check?

    Thx!

Thank you, this will be a big help.

I am working on the specifications for a set of Dyna coils, as an option when replacing stock. Dyna now has all the spec's - I have sent them the relevant pages from the Factory Manual – less the mounting hole spacing.

Once they have this last piece of the puzzle they will make their recommendation.

Interesting. It's about 102mm which is 4 inches, on center.

I would've expected a nice "round" metric dimension, but the inch dimension seems more deliberate!

    IC?

You're trying to find a suitable replacement for the OE Coils on our VF500's?

You bet - a replacement and possible upgrade. I have been corresponding with a tech there so we'll see what they have to say.

Do our OE Coils need upgrading or will it also serve as a cheaper (as well as better) alternative to expensive Dealer parts?

These are very good questions. To tell the truth I don't know the answers - yet.

I'll keep you posted on whether this is an upgrade and/or if it is a cost savings over OEM.

    A bit more intel:

    Dyna

    coil spec: DC1-1 (3 Ohm)
    plug wire spec: DW-200

"The coils should be an easy bolt on. Just transfer the primary wires over and install the new plug wires. The DW-200 plug wire kit is a copper core wire, and would reuse your factory resistor caps."

    Accel

    coil spec: 140403(k) (3 Ohm)
plug wire spec: waiting to hear back from Accel on this

In terms of the 3 Ohm coil vs. the stock 2.8 Ohm rating the Dyna tech writes:

"The difference between the 2.8 and 3.0 ohm in the coils is nothing to be concerned with performance or spark wise. Conversely, if you went to a 2.2 ohm replacement coil instead of the factory specified 2.8 ohm coil it would either destroy the coil and/or the ignition module in a short time."

So what are the main differences between the Dyna and the Accel?

Jamie said the Dynas have been known to be not very reliable...no?

Yes, Jamie noted that he has heard of reliability issues with Dyna. I personally have used them with great results - as have many other owners of custom CB400F bikes (these are 5 Ohm coils on the 400/4). I would think the 3 Ohm coils for the VF500F would be the same reliability but it is good to hear from other owners on this.

I wrote to Accel to ask a few more questions regarding their spec's but haven't heard back yet. Both Dyna and Accel use a non-suppressive plug wire - Dyna uses 7mm copper core and I believe Accel spec's 8.8mm stainless/silver-plate (though it doesn't specifically say this on their site) for their Universal 'Super Coil' Kit.

Dyna spec's that you reuse the stock caps, Accel supplies new caps.

I will say Dyna has been great with answering my questions which means something to me - in terms of how they run their company - *soap box disclaimer added here*.

A bit more intel from the tech at Accel - the plug wires supplied with their Universal 'Super Coil Kit' are 8.8mm graphite RFI suppressive core.

From what I've read (and also experienced on my 400/4) graphite RFI suppressive core is not what you want to use - i.e. graphite core wire is politely described as 'junk' on Mike Nixon's site.

Dyna spec's solid copper core (7mm) so I would give the advantage to Dyna on this. Of course you could also purchase copper core wire and use this with the Accel coils - but I'd stay clear of their Universal Kit and order the wire separately.

I probably wouldn't choose a coil based only on plig wire type. Those are parts that you can easily change out if you don't like what they come with.

Seems like coils are the hot topic right now!

While I've had excellent results with Dyna's on a 400/4, I appreciate the feedback that Accel's 3 Ohm coil may be a better pick for the VF500F.
