I will hopefully by the spring be a VFR owner. I'm currently an 84 Nighthawk owner and want to upgrade. My wife and I go for trips but I'd like to be able to talk to her while we ride, I think this would keep her much happier. Does anyone have any recommendations on communication systems? Preferably low cost, but I'd rather get a good one.

Autocom is the best from what most people say, but I am very cheap. My system is some midland radios that I got for $40 and a bike specific headset for midland radio that I got from Fry's for $40 so for around $80, I have bike to bike comms. Pros: cheap, works well, can use and channel that radio has included private modes. Cons: Not usable above 70-80mph, lot's of wires, only PTT worth using, I am told that it doesn't work bike to passenger at least over the radio (perhaps too close?)

Midland GXT-850 Radios. Very nice set with 2 radios, 2 headsets with boom mic, Ac and DC charger.

you have to buy the helmet specific mic and speakers for it to be usable, though.

I guess to be more clear, I'd ideally like to be able to listen to music, and chat with my wife so I would need a two person system. I don't really care so much about phone calls, but it would be nice. I'm looking in the $200+ range ideally. I'm not sure if that's considered cheap.

look and see if anythings available on newenough.com

I got a great price on a bluetooth helmet headset to pair with my phone. They have deals on other communicaitons offerings as well.

Just an FYI on what I've found so far. My phone would play music if I was on a corded headset. Once I switched to the BT headset, my phone no longer has the option to send tunes to my dumbo ears. Also email, SMS, and MMS notifications won't come over my BT headset either.

So I can get phone calls, but can't talk directly to the wife on the back seat unless she calls me. If the wife was with me, I wouldn't have my work phone paired up with the headset anyway, so I'm hoping to find another BT receiver we can both connect to??

Here's a link to the helmet headset I speak of:

I have a 98 VFR and my wife rides an 84 Nighthawk! What does this have to do with communication systems? Nothing...

    I too have a Scala Rider Q2...love it. = )

I'm about to buy a chatterbox XBi2 system. $200US It's AD2P (Stereo Blutooth) and it has some great reviews. It's the version that can communicate up to 500 meters. The standard XBi is rider to passenger. $169 US

Are these prices for one system? Meaning to setup my helmet? I'm looking for two units for mine and my wifes helmet. When I looked up the chatterbox on ebay, it looked like roughly $195 for one unit. Then I'd have to purchase a second for my wife right? And this would be pretty standard for all of the kids where I'd have to buy two units? Thanks.

AUTOCOM. Bite the (cost) bullit. Maybe not the cheapest, but pretty simple to fit, clear sound and does music (MP3), phone, bike to bike.
Wife and I are both pleased with it. We bought after recommendations from other couples, having wasted my time and money on cheaper sets which were not audible at speed, and were not very versatile.

Are you using something else, or just don't like talking to yourself ? I'd be interested to see how it works.

Actually, I do listen to music with my setup and also have bike to bike chat. I use an ipod and earplugs for the tunes, then the midland headset for the radio. I can hear it well enough until I get up to 70 or 80, then I can hear that someone is on the radio but can't tell what they are saying. Unless it is Scubalong, then I can't tell what he's saying at 20 mph. Where this system wouldn't work for you, I think, is trying to chat with passenger. SLOVFR tried it and said it didn't seem to work having the radios so close together. Tori (another member) is working on putting the tunes in one ear and the talk in the other and thinks he has found a reputable source to do the wiring well enough that it won't pick up engine noise, etc.

I wish I had the $$$...but like you said, if I may paraphrase, if you value your time...sometimes you're just better off to go straight to the solution that works!!

Despite my music being in mono...the Scala Rider Q2 is performing for me!

I am not looking for BT, just a simple set up. I found the TORK RIDEMATE, anyone hear anything about them? Goes for about $90, only rider to passenger though.

I did the same, wasted alot of money on crap that wouldn't work. AUTOCOM is expensive, but it's the CHEAPEST way to do what you want to do.

Couple guys on a local forum are going with the Sena SMH10. One guy has been researching what intercom system to get for a while, and this review seems to have won him over: Sena SMH10 Intercom Part 2 - webBikeWorld
