I just bought a 93 vfr750 and its in very good condition. i have replaced the RECTIFIER and flush mounted the rear turn signals.

the only problem i am having is that the speedometer/odometer isn't working correctly. ill drive 20miles and it reads like 5miles and the speedometer will read like 10MPH when im doing about 80MPH.

hoping i find help as to how to approach where i should start to fix it.

    thanks!!

On your front sprocket cover is the speedo cable drive, you may want to remove the driver and inspect the coupler , driver, and the cable for wear and damage.Smart money syas the problem is there.

hell why complain, you can put miles and miles on it then resell it with barely any added on :) oh wait that is probably what the PO probably did. I agree with Toe Cutter check the front sproket cover and make sure all is well there. the speedo gear thingy might not be sitting on the front spocket bolt properly or the hole could rounded off.

If it is reading at all I would guess it is the coupler where it slips over the sprocket bolt.

I have seen a couple that were installed incorrectly and the coupler was pushed onto the shaft of the driver too far and were just rubbing on the bolt. They read very low or not at all as well. There is a good chance you may be able to just slide it back into position if it is not badly damaged and it will be fine. You need to remove and inspect to see if it will mate back to the bolt, if that is what is wrong. But it is my very first guess. I can post a pic of a gen 5 version if you want, it is a little different but you will get the jist of the thing.

This is a gen 5 electronic driver but it is along the same idea of your mechanical one, when the sprocket cover is removed it needs to be lined back up with the bolt or it can be damaged. It can be ruined but I have seen a couple that just pushed the shaft through the center and was able to slide it back into position and run it again. Gen 3 is little different but I think the coupler is able to be purchased seperatly. If that is your problem I would think a crafty bastard could monkey it back to operation.

You can remove just the driver and not the cover, should not have to remove plastic. Remove and inspect the assembly for damage and go from there. No way to tell what to do until you inspect it.

im not quite used to working on bikes. i have worked on four wheelers all my life tho. does that cover just bolt off? you said i don't have to take off fairings so im hoping that it is just a cover right there near the shifter.

    thanks again for the help!!

    hey fellas.

ok so i found the problem with the 93. when i took off the housing that bolts onto the front sprocket i found a coupler that attaches to the sprocket bolt. its a hard plastic nut that attaches to the housing and slides on the sprocket bolt. well that coupler was rounded out.

so now i am going to buy another one and put it on this week.

thanks again for all the helpfull advice.

Just make sure you get the new one back on the head of the sprocket bolt correctly. Which the PO probably did not do and why it rounded out.
