Broken: Fuel joint between the middle two carbs ( the short joint). Help me Any-One Kenobi, you're my only hope against spending way too much. Any parts guys out there? I'll pay bottom dollar. Otherwise. If anyone has any mod ideas that won't result in me going 75mph while engulfed in fire, I'll entertain the idea.----------S

My carbs needed cleaning after neglecting them for two seasons. She started running not so good last year. I popped the carbs off last night and since the boots were stiff, I had to use a bit of "man-torque". I wasn't rough with them but I got it tweaked at just the right angle. It broke the end off just inside the rear right carbs.

I thought I remembered from the forum that these things were made of plati-gol-ver. that makes me even more mad. I have an idea of using two different diameters of tubing. One would slip over the other and hold the o-rings in place and the other would carry fuel.
I'm used to SOHC 4 carbs. The all come off at once and you don't have to be that gentle with them. These VF cabs are like freaking clock mechanisms. Honda, were we doing a few too many lines in the 80's?

Did you remove the manifold when you removed the carbs?

My guess is yes. That's pretty much the only way those tubes can break.

Do not spit or piss into the wind, if you can't see the fuel level in your tank do not use a lighter or match for light, do not lick a wall socket, and DO NOT TAKE THE DAMN MANIFOLD OFF!:deadhorse:

    I. did. not. take. the. manifold. off. These carbs are not strung together like my SOHC fours. They are all kerfuffled into individual units. The are connected by throttle & choke linkage but there is no tie that binds. I found that to be weird.....

Can you all tell that this is the first time I have had these carbs off of this bike? I am treading different waters than I am used to. I have no fear, I just broke something that cost too much for what it is and I'm pissed.

Hey. Yes, I did remove the air cleaner aluminum box thingy. ( where is the "bang my head against the wall" smiley?) Is THAT what you are all calling the manifold? I didn't think to leave that in place. Is it possible to remove the carbs with that still attached? Toecutter, come out of the corner now and say "HA, I told you so". I didn't even think to look at that option. Shit..... uh, I guess I'm in the corner now. Gimme the pointy hat.

They do need to be removed as a unit and then if needed you take the manifold off but I never advise taking it off unless necessary do to the problems that it can cause. They are a bit of a Rubik's Cube the first couple of times you have to take them that far apart. Just take your time and be careful not to break or bend linkage or the mounting ears on the side of the carb bodies.

I saw this big aluminum thing in the way of getting to my carbs. I took it off. As far as it being a Rubik's cube, I have one of them thar photographic memories. I can take something apart and put it back together from memory a year later. I just can't seem to safely be around Bakelite.....
The more I contemplate what action to take here, the better those metal replacements look. I haven't got dependable access to a lathe these days. I'll go to the hardware store and look around for some inspiration....
