Yesterday I took the seat fairing off for the first time to do some minor stuff and decided to look around a bit while under there. The older Hondas have a WELL known problem with melting of the plug for the 3 yellow wires coming out of the RR and I really didn't think that this would still be a design flaw on a 98 model, but apparently it is:

The fix is easy and I caught this one early so no real harm done, but BOY was I surprised that they haven't fixed this with either a better plug and/or better materials. Guess I'd better check all the connections on my "new" bike and see if there are any more surprises.

Likely the spade connectors got loose. Everyone should be checking these and crushing the females closed with a screwdriver and then it should connect back up super tight then this won't happen.

Well, I had to cut the plug entirely since it welded itself together. Wires are now connected with conventional crime style M-F connectors--- a semi-permanent fix but the connections are quite solid now and reasonably protected from moisture. I plan to keep an eye on these for now and may do a more thorough fix later in the year. I Finally got the new chain on it yesterday and need to do some RIDIN!
