Do you have the heads off yet?
What did you find? Did you find the reason for the engine not turning 360ยบ?

Make sure the tensioners are good before putting the engine back together.

Did not have the time to remove the heads this weekend; however, after doing more thinking I am almost positive the valves are stuck. The carbs were one of the first things I took off the bike, leaving the intake holes exposed to the elements. Though the bike was kept under cover, I am assuming at least some moisture got into the intake and exhaust and caused some oxidation on the valves. Heads will definitely come off this weekend but I am thinking this is the problem. So far everything else looks to be in good condition. Donald, if I eventually do need to get new camchains, will the ones I mentioned work or are they model/year-specific? I only ask cause there are a couple on Ebay for around $30 including shipping, vs. the OEM $130 on Bike Bandit. Thanks!

    About buying motorcycle parts.
One time I walked into a motorcycle shop where they had choppers and parts.

I was looking to buy wheels.
The sales person Looked like a real thug ( little scary) said "Our wheels START at $600.00 each.:faint2:
But we have some other wheels that cost much more. $1200.00 and up. Etc.,.
He seemed to be bragging about how expensive the wheels were that they sold like he was really proud of it.

    I walked out.

Buy the way that sales guy....he had all of his knuckels tatoo'd with two words - CASH ONLY.

I tell you real life is funnier than any movie!!!

NOT for a second do i believe that "oxidation" caused sticky valves. Your problem is a bent valve or an almost bent valve because YOUR VALVE TIMING SHIFTED cus your chain jumped 2 or more teeth, probably as a result of bad chaIn tensioner, VERY common on the flawed first gen bikes.....

When the valves are removed then you can lay the valve stems on a glass plate and roll them, and find out the truth. The corsponding valve guide will have to be replaced too DEPENDING on if it is damaged at all.
Check the piston crowns for damage and that will be an indication as to which valve is damaged if ANY.

This whole experience of taking this engine apart and putting it back together will last a lifetime and
give you a lot of confidence to work on other engines.

Does anyone buy a motorcycle so they can work on engines?? NO, You bought a motorcycle to RIDE.

But you can't because Honda screwed up back in 1983. Find a newer gen VFR, and move on.

Outside of male /female relationships, all problems are fixable.I am waiting for pic's of bore before sticking a fork in this. Remember what the doctor said at your AID's test......think positive!

Even if it was not fixable (highly unlikely) by the way. You would still know how an engine is constructed
and you would know the inner workings of that engine and other similar engines.

People are still rebuilding 1970's HONDA 750 four engines to this day and small companies have made all the parts available
to make the engine even better than it used to be.

Mean while if you buy a new Honda 1200 many of the parts will be plastic and will not be available. Not repairable easily. They will also be ungodly expensive!!!
They are being MADE TO THROW away.
The engines that can be rebuilt over and over are greener in the long run when you think about the earths resources.

When I was 16 yrs. old they were riding HONDA 750 4's and when I die someone will be riding one.
And I will still be helping others to rebuild bikes up till that time too. So the engine building skills I learned have been
helping me for 40 years!!! Very valuable.

How much would shipping be? Not sure I should be spending the money quite yet. I realize it's a good deal for an engine but depending on it's overall condition I might have to pass. If it is running and in good condition I might consider but I don't want you to go through any inconvenience if you don't think it's worth it.
