So I'm leaking fluid from the clutch cylinder near the front sprocket. Got all over the sprocket and chain and I can hear it "hissing" when I press the lever.

What is the general fix for this? You replace the entire cylinder or rebuild it?

(Not the Cylinder near the clutch lever but the lower one)

Yes, Sir. It's the slave rebuild you need. As far as a gasket, the last one I did was on my '82 Magna V45. There was no gasket availible so I got a sheet of gasket material and cut one out. Worked fine with no worries. Good luck to you.

DOT 4. I broke down and bought a Mityvac bleeder, but Elwray here on the site uses a clear plastic bottle with a hole cut in the top. Stuff the tube in the hole and you're good!

BTW, a squirrel AND a hamster posted here! What gives with all the rodents?

    +1

Purchasing a Mityvac is well worth the extra nickle. Hydraulic fluid isn't much fun to work with and this tool makes the job much easier.

    Sweet. Thanks everyone.

I got the kit off Ebay and a cheap 1 man bleeder kit from Canadian Tire + 2 big bottles of DOT 4 Brake Fluid.

I mights as well bleed the Brakes after I finish the clutch too.

    Did someone say my name???

If you've got two people, you can bleed it without any special tools. You can probably do it yourself if you're flexible. The Mityvac is a nice investment though.

We just used a water bottle, popped a hole in the cap, stuck one end of the tubing in the hole, the other on the bleed valve. Open the valve, and have one person pumping the lever and pouring new fluid in the cylinder, once it starts coming out clear the lever-man holds it closed/engaged while the valve-man closes the bleed valve.

If it was me...I would use this opportunity to rebuild the master (also easy) as well. Nothing like knowing that a system is new from front to back...

I was always told in regard to a lot of systems on our bikes:

"If it ain't broke...don't fix it."

Yeah, well the cost for the kit is nominal and since you have to open and bleed the system anyway...

    Very true.

...and I'll be honest and say that it had crossed my mind. Even thinking of installing steel braided lines too.

But I would rather sink as little $$ into this bike as possible. It is nothing but problems for me.

    Slave repair kit arrived today.

Looks like 2 rubber seals, the spring and the bleeder screw cover.

Don't spend any extra money on this bike UNLESS you have money to spare. If it's a hobby and you have the $$$, have fun! But at the end of the process it will still be nothing but a 1986 VF500F with a VF500F engine, a VF500F valve train, VF500F carbs, etc.

Yeah, I have a 1984 VF750F. My HEAD knows that I shouldn't put any extra money in it, but my HEART says it would be fun to upgrade the shock, mount F2 wheels with radial tires, yadda yadda yadda. Help! I am crazy!

But, I cannot complain. The bike keeps me busy - replacing leaky fork seals and cracked clutch pushrod seals and worn-out cam chain tensioners and blown head gaskets, searching for parts on eBay for hours on end, developing new and inventive profanities, Skyping with my mechanic brother while I try to figure out why the %&$#) parts won't fit right. The 2004 VFR just runs and runs and runs. What fun is that!??!
