I searched and found one similar post but it wasn't told if the problem was rectified....

Bike is a 95, 17,500 miles, pretty decent shape, always garage kept.... The bike has been down but doesn't seem like anything major...

Anyway, I have a totally dead tach. Curious as to where to start. And once I'm there what to look for... As in when I locate the wire for the tach, how do I test to see if it's getting siginal, or how can I see if the tach is at fault?

First 25 miles on the bike were sweet, far more comfortable than my others !! Think I'm gonna like this one, may have to keep it for a while ;)

    Steve

First step is to inspect the drive coupler for damage and to be sure it is coupled with the sprocket. They can break or if not installed carefully the plastic coupler can be pushed back on the shaft of the speedo driver. It is located on the front sprocket cover, the wires will be a dead give away.

Hey Toe Cutter, seems like you are refering to the speedo, I'm having an issue with the tach(engine rev not reading).... Bike runs fine... Looking at a wiring diagram it shows it's driven right from the CDI box. Like I said, I've searched all over and there is one simalar post but doesn't say if he ever figured it out. There is one other from a different Gen VFR I saw, same issues and was fixed by replacing the CDI box itself. I was wondering if there is a commmon failure point to look at to get me started and hopefully it is quick and cheap fix.

    Thanks, Steve

Modest, too...Toe Cutter's input is always welcome and pretty accurate, even if off topic a bit. You might be able to read a signal with a peak voltmeter. If it's not a poor connection between tach and ECM I'd guess the tach is failed.

Dizz is on point again, I have been huffing paint. I would think that your problem is at a connector, if I remember correctly the connection is in the back if the gauge cluster and would check there for the signal and the point of failure. With a good meter you should be able to check for the signal or an open on the tach circuit within the cluster. I will bet it is in connection or a damaged wire.

Ok, unlike others that don't post the cure for their problems......

Checked wiring from CDI to gauges, was good.... As I suspected due to this bikes low milage and being garage kept it's entire life.... So I opened up the gauge cluster and the needle was stuck, little force and it moved but wouldn't return. Pulled the tach out of the housing.... A spider had mad a little egg cocoon(?) in there and locked it all up!!! The dead spider was in there too... So a bunch of blowing and spinning it and all is now fine.

Thanks for responding to my post guys... Hopefully everyones problems can be resolved this easy !!
