If it was all the gears or high gears you could say yes, but that is not the case here.
You know what has to be done to fix the problem, either fix it or don't, wishful thinking ain't gonna magically make it a clutch problem.

No kidding! That would be worth a drive up north for sure!

Hey, I can be wrong just like anyone else. It's tough to diagnose something without having the bike here, but it sure sounds to me like classic gearbox failure.

    What makes you so sure?

Is it a common issue with the vf1000? What if I change the clutch and it works...What you gonna say then? Sorry?

Yes, exactly. Gearbox problems are common on the early VF's and clutch issues are rare.

    Thanks Jamie!

    No Disrespect intended!

I was thinking of a way to diagnose this... if I ride the bike and it slips in 2nd gear and I hold the shift lever down with my foot and it catches...then it would be a gear issue...Correct?

    thanks,

Nope, sorry. The gear shift mechanism is not a direct drive. Since you have already shifted into second gear, the mechanism has indexed already. Holding down on the lever does nothing to keep the gear dogs in mesh - that's the shift drum's job.

Yeah, it's a bummer. Unfortunately what you are describing sounds like the same thing many others have faced also. It sounds like it's time to start searching eBay for some good parts!

It doesn't really work that way. You will need to replace the parts that are damaged - which may be from other 'gears'. You see, it's a constant mesh gearbox which means the gear teeth for ALL gears are always together. To engage a particular gear the shift drum slides certain parts side-to-side which engages dogs/slots on the sides of the gears which make the connection. To lock in that gear it requires the help from the neighboring parts. You need to tear the engine down and determine which parts are bad first. If it's anything like the gearboxes I've repaired you'll find more than just second gear is damaged to the point where it needs replaced.

It's actually pretty easy to know which ones you would need. Just look at the gearbox parts that are discontinued and those will be the ones. My suggestion would be to try and find a good condition complete gearbox, shift drum and shift forks because probably all of them are damaged to some degree by now. The problem will be finding good parts as this was very common (mentioned before) so what you find will likely also be damaged. Be sure to ask for detailed pictures of the gear dogs and the 1-2 shift slot in the drum to ensure there is no wear or damage on the parts.

I'd ship the gearbx to Dave for the undercut service. He does great work and is as cheap as anyone (even cheaper, in fact). As for the shift forks and shift drum, you are going to have to find good used parts. I've been thinking about ways to repair these parts but currently do not have an option for that.
