dskelton, you are the MAN! Way to hook a brother up!

Mike (I assume that's your name from the pic of you and the girl in the van) - if you need a hand, I work in the area... I work at Burton Snowboards (about 2 miles from Champlain). I'd be willing to lend a hand or tools. LMK.

It sounds like you are on the right track now.

Congrats on the find and a shout-out to dskelton - a stand up thing sir, giving your parts bike to a fellow enthusiast!

On the soapbox for a minute - I would really suggest purchasing a Factory Manual for this project - used originals show up on eBay in the fifteen dollar range and are well worth the price. I have both the Factory and the Clymer manuals and can attest to the difference in quality - politely said, the Clymer falls a bit short of the mark.

    Keep up the good work!

I agree, I had the honda shop manual for my 1980 CB650 way back in the day and it was a great help. I have picked up a Clymer and a Honda Shop in the last towo days and paid 40 bucks plus shipping total for both. I am waiting for them to arive so I can start wrenching on my bike.

Thanks for the offer Matt, I'll take you up on that once this weather of ours gets a little warmer, and dryer. Working at Burton must be pretty awesome man.

Man, that brings a tear to my eye. dskelton, you are awesome. I am such a parts hoarder, which makes it difficult giving away anything VF. This kid is obviously smitten with this bike and that just brings back great memories of my RD350, KZ400, CB750, which I couldn't sleep at night thinking of the next days wrenching. Very cool!

I bought a running '86 500F not long after I picked up that parts bike so my need to do anything with it pretty much went away. That and Mike just seemed so damned determined to get his fixed I figured I'd help him out and free up some precious floor space in the garage.
I'm sure he'll make far better use of the parts on that bike than I ever did.

The warm weather gave me the opportunity to do some more work on the bike, started at 10am and ended at 9pm.

    Sanded and painted chipped paint
    Before:

    During:

    After:

Sanded and painted exhaust pipes and collector box
    Before:

    During:

    After:

Removed engine and needed components from dskelton's bike. I used just about everything from dskelton's bike, the rear rim is the wrong size so it wasn't needed.

Not Pictured: Changed rear fairing, broken signal lights, replaced faded rear tail guard, changed out cracked gauges.

And now I've got the engine in the house and was going to check valve clearances, only to find out my newly purchased 26 blade feeler gauge doesn't go low enough to use. I really don't want to do the valve clearances, I just don't want to deal with the readjusting- and buying another gauge, but we'll see how it goes tomorrow.

dskelton's bike came with an odometer that read 7k (not on bike), and an engine that did not match the frame. The frame looked like it had a lot of miles on it and the camshafts on this bike look absolutely great. I'm guessing the 7k odometer is to the engine. It also had absolutely unused oil in it, but I drained it to work on some things.

Finally, the workspaces. Doing the best I can with what I've got. Helps that the house mates went home for easter!:

What's up? This weather has been amazing, huh? Very unusual for early April...

I have a set of feeler gauges that go pretty low, let me know if you'd like to use them, I could possibly buzz them down to B-Town this afternoon if you'd like. I'd sure like to check out what you've got going on with that 500.

Call me @ 802-899-2521 if you'd like to get together and keep on truckin' on your project...

I painted my Exhaust using High heat Black paint. Turned out great!

Was thinking of doing the same to my Slip ons.

You were saying the rear rim from your parts bike was the wrong size??

Yeah its a rim from another bike, and is a little more narrow than the stock size. I'm a big fan of the high heat black, it looks great. I guess I'll see how long it holds up though, I hear mixed reviews.

Funny you should say that, I knew it was going to rain today so I covered everything. At least I thought I did. I left two open fuel tanks outside and now they've got rainwater in them. Damnit.

I used an entire can on the exhaust and it's holding up great.

I used the VHT Flameproof stuff.

I useded a full can of the exact same stuff. Quick question: do the fuel lines go from tank to filter to pump to carb, or is it tank to pump to filter to carb?

'84 stock fuel delivery setup: petcock-filter-pump-carburetors

Side note to above - this system can be removed if you switch to a gravity fed setup. This requires the modification of the stock petcock but this is very straightforward (see DMr's website for the playbook).

The bike is really coming together now. I fixed the sticking throttle, only to have it start sticking again when I put the air filter on. I'll have to work on it a bit more. The carbs on it are pretty durty and stick, so that's another thing on the to do list. Replaced the seat lock and a bunch of other side things.
