Not a clue. I am waiting for the experts to weigh in. I know I am right because it's my opinion. LOL

I dont have a problem with opinions...Its when they insist that you need to replace this or replace that...I personally don't think that one should advise anyone to go out and replace something without trying a few options first...there should be a VFRworld law against this on this board.

    my 2 cents

    Here is the problem....

The neutral switch AND the "so called" clutch switch work together.
It will start in nuetral but lets say you are at a stoplight and for some reason your bike stalls.
You just pull in the clutch and start the bike WHILE it is in gear.

The "clutch switch" actually is a wire going to the start relay. The other wire goes to ground.
Check your particular bikes workshop manual wiring diagram as there could be other schemes.

Motorcycles used to not have the so called clutch switch and if your bike stalled
you would have to put the bike in neutral to start the bike. That created a situation where you could be hit by a car
    from behind.

They should call that switch the start relay hand lever switch.

AND why was all these switches need in the first place? You ask.
KICKSTAND SWITCH, NUETRAL LIGHT SWITCH, CLUTCH SWITCH

BECAUSE the way it used to be was that motorcyclists were SMART enough NOT to try to start their motorcycle while it was in gear and the clutch was not pulled in and run the washing machine over!!!

SO....Someone sued a motorcycle company and said, "Well there was nothing TELLING me to pull in the clutch lever to start the bike!!!

Just some of my black humor/satire.

There are some pro wrenches here that are good. There are some who think a Mexican socket set and a sledge hammer are all you need to fix anything. Bottom line is that it could have been your sidestand switch that was part of the problem. To even infer that it was the total problem and the one and only contributing factor ain't real smart. IMO ;)

You should be able to start the bike up IN GEAR, if the kickstand is up AND THE CLUTCH LEVER IS PULLED IN.

I can see it coming now...... All motorcycles will have to have a light that indicates that the kickstand is up or down.
