So I pull into my basement last night, put the bike on the center stand, let it sit for a few minutes then take a look at the sight glass. I see a few little bubbles in there. Is this a bad thing? I can't see air bubbles doing much good for the lubrication process. The only thing that I can think of is too much oil, but I used the directed amount (3.1 quarts) when I did the oil change last. What do you guys think? Too much oil?

Good thing they are tiny bubbles. It's the big ones you have to worry about.

The easiest first thing that I would check would be my oil level....for peace of mind if nothing else.

Seriously though. Just pour oil in to oil and you'll get tiny bubbles from the air that the drop takes with it. Same as letting oil run down the case. Now if you had a gazillion bubbles and the oil turned to a different color then you should be worried. Otherwise NOP.

if you over heat oil there will be little bubbles in there all the time and the oil needs to be changed but if you were just riding there will be quite a bit which is normal

86-87 doen't have a sight glass. It has a dip stick. Here's a question, do you read the dipstick fullmark from when you just unsrewed it from casting, or do you pull it out clean it and then just it inti to the hole and then pull it out and read it. There's about a 1/4 inch different in depth of the stick in the casing. I know it sounds stupid, but what is the correct way.

You just stick it in the hole without screwing it (sorry, I had to say it!):party2:

Seriously, straight out of the manual:
Start the engine and let it idle for 2-3 minutes
    Turn off the engine
Suppot the motorcycle in an upright position on level ground
Remove the dipstick, wipe it clean and insert it without screwing it in.
Note: Insert dipstick into the clutch cover 2-3 minutes after the engine stops
