Looks like I need to replace the rear cylinder head gasket. According to a few website, the head gasket is no longer available. Anyone else have this problem and figure out where to get one?

Just an update. Did some more investigation of where exactly the oil leak is coming from. It is from the Cylinder Head Cover Gasket, not the actual head gasket, which is lower down on the head (still trying to learn this engine). I can get the Cylinder head cover gasket from several places online.

heres a (stupid) question.. obviously you can make your own gaskets with permatex or whatever.. im assuming there would be too much pressure to expect this method to work for a head gasket. any input?

Oh yeah.. and Hi! Im new here.. but Ill be here plenty! Im sure ill have MANY more stupid questions!

I bought a kit from Japanese Vintage Motorcycle Parts - Partsnmore.com And so far it seems to be a good set. It has most of the gaskets you need. Right now I'm in need of the o-rings for the coolant tubes to the heads (probably just get some out of a o-ring kit) and the formed o-rings that go to the coolant tube on the block between the heads.

How much did the kit run you? did the head gaskets come with it?

ive gone to PowerSportsPro - 20% OFF Honda, Kawasaki, Suzuki & Yamaha Motorcycle Parts, ATV Parts & Accessories for a variety of various gaskets for my 87 vfr 700, and really never had problems finding anything there. and when i get the parts, theyre always in OEM bags with honda stickers and part numbers on them and everything. head gaskets, valve cover gaskets, even those stupid boots that mount the carbs onto the heads, and oh, those 2 wierd looking twistie bolts that hold the mid panels on below the fuel tank....parts arent necessarily touch to find once you know where to look, and as long as you have these forums like vfrworld handy, finding what you need is always possible.

I wonder if the Vesrah kits have them..? If you wouldn't mind, could you please detail which o-rings are supplied with the 'Partsmore' kit?

I can when I get back down to work, maybe later today. I'll take pics of what IS in the kit, minus the one head gasket I have installed.

The o-rings that I NEED are the ones for the coolant tubes, both in the heads and the one that attaches to the block, in between the cylinders. I'm pretty sure I can use standard o-rings for the heads, but the others are formed for the groove in the housings.

    Good deal, thanks!

Also, you might give the ol' reverse lookup a try - if you have the OEM part number:
