I posted the test link for information only, it does not necessarily reflect my opinion of the product. I have used and still do use K&N type filters, but I am also willing to accept the fact that they pass more dirt, and more dirt equals accelerated wear. The really interesting part about the article for me (I'm guessing 90% of the K&N supporters don't bother to read it fully through) is that in the tests a K&N filter only flows better for a short time and "plugs up" 3 times faster than an OEM type filter. With that in mind, how often are you guys cleaning your filters?

Also, anyone who doesn't think the dirt entering the intake has a direct effect on camshaft wear needs to read into that a little deeper as well.

I would worry more about all the metal fragments from the clutch and transmission that circulates in the engine oiling system.

I'm a certified Toyota mechanic. I don't care what kind of filters people buy, but I think people should make an educated decision about what they are buying instead of basing their decisions on hearsay or manufacturer's advertising claims.

I have no clue, but my tuner recommended BMC. His work is highly respected in the area so that's what I bought. I really don't have time or interest in second-guessing a guy who makes his living tuning bikes and who has customers lined up out the door and around the corner. When the going gets complicated, the lazy rely on experts they trust.

    Besides, I don't WANT to clean my air filter . . . .

My 98 VFR had an OEM filter that looked like it had never been changed. It was nasty! I replaced it with the OEM part and my butt dyno couldn't tell a difference. <shrug>

All manufacturers make claims. It's called " advertising" in English. In Spanish the word is translated as "propaganda" . I agree that people should make educated decisions about what they are buying. As a mechanic, my guess is that you see just the opposite of this several times a day.

What would the parts guy at your work tell a customer if the customer asked which was the better filter for one of the Toyotas you work on? He might say to a few customers that a K&N or another aftermarket brand is better. He might say this until somebody tells him he had better cool it or he is out the door.

    k&n oil filter

I have used K&N air filters for years on all types of bikes,I am cheap (reuseable filter),you dont have to be a rocket scientist to figure it out , look at K&N big holes after oiling(more dirt thru filter) filter medium gets dirty less holes ,less dirt passes thru filter, less air(but okay because of larger filter area over stock)I would tend to agree that the paper filter will initially filter better, but I have put 200,000 kms on a st 1100 running K&N no problems, and 400,000 on my ford truck running a K&N filter,I think the particles that pass thru the K&N are not large enough to cause problems compared to poor oil filters and engine breakdown contaminates.Of course this is just my opinion I am not a rocket scientist

WTF! SOB,:mmph: it pains me to say I'm completely in billy's camp on this one :smash: along with the others who said your oil filter and frequent oil changes are far more important the any miniscule amount of "DUST" that might pass thru one air filter vs. another.

I'd bet money that 75% of the people worried about one air filter over the other don't even blow the crap away from around their spark plugs before removing and replacing.

Great thread! Gave me a good laugh!

    Just a thought...

K&N suggest a cleaning ever 50,000 miles if you stay mainly on paved roadways.

K&N filters allow 1800 percent more dirt to pass through vs a stock OEM filter...

In other words, a stock filter traps 1800 percent more dirt than a K&N filter...

Given both the K&N and OEM have the exact same amount of surface area, this equates to a K&N filter at 50,000 miles having the same amount of dirt (and needing to be cleaned) as an OEM filter at 2700 miles???

    That doesn't add up.
