Well, I've got the shipping set up on the '87 just need to send the money. Hopefully I won't miss the extra 50cc. I wish I could have found a 750 in my $ range.
    Thanks everyone for the help.

Don't worry about the extra 50 cc's. Let us know how you like it. That's a pretty bike.

Well, it's all set and paid for. I do have a question though. I posted about getting the bike on a non motorcycle site and got this response:

not to rain on your parade on your new to you bike but there were some issues with the top end not getting enough oil. There are mods out there to correct it. Just thought I would let you know before you lunched the new scoot.

Anyone have some input on this?
    thanks

No worries the 86- 87 VFRs never had any such problems. The bikes (engines) were redesigned in 86 to eliminate those issues.

The reason you are seeing people posting things like this is there WERE issues with oiling to top end and there were cam issues on top of that. These issues were corrected by Honda in your 86 VFR so you don't need to worry about it. Rest easy and post up some pics when you get her home!

    No pesky timing chains either.

Yeah, I thought he was wrong, but then he posted:

I had an 86 with the same engine and was told by Honda that there is a retro fit pipe or fittings ( not sure ) to correct the issue. I could be wrong on your bike. Just thought it would be something to look in to before you toasted the motor

So, I was kind of second guessing myself. Thanks to everyone here. This really is a great site!!

AS a consistent booster of the '86s, i'll weigh in on this topic.

MY choice would be the gen3: i favor the improvements to the engine, the wider wheels and radial tires, and most especially, the swingarm.

All very practical and useful improvements !

Every new gen of VFR was a big improvement over the last, up to and thru the 5th gen. I feel the 6th gens where a regression. At this point the VFR just became another bike,ie...Nothing special. The folks that bought 6th gens, had no appreciation for the pure design of the gear driven cams of the previous generations.

The 92 is a better bike, if anything, just because it's a CAD motorcycle with a better balanced and smoother engine.

IMO, VFRs started going down hill right after they switched away from carbs !!

OK, my '97 has a very smooth and balanced engine, which makes it like an "appliance," while my '86 has the rough edges and unrefined growl of a proper MOTORCYCLE !!

There was a good write up more detailed than this info below but I forget the site, it was detailed info about the durability of the second gen VFR 700/750... 24 hours near or at redline except for fuel stops. Some of the story below from AMA hall of Fame about (Paul Dean).

(A year later, Honda attempted to break the Cycle World/Suzuki record with its first VFR750F, and Dean provided the company with some of the valuable information his team had learned in their run. Then, mere minutes after successfully breaking the 24-hour record, Honda turned the VFR over to Dean and allowed him to ride it from Texas back to Southern California and perform a complete teardown of the engine. Dean found that the majority of the wear items in the VFR’s engine were still within installation specs, even after the grueling test.)

Awesome.... hence the wide use of the term "almost bullet proof" with these babies.

Buy the '92 and put an '86 paint scheme on it. Nuff said ~

I have an 86 and I think its a near perfect bike. It'd be perfect if I could upgrade parts or even replace OEM parts more easily without resorting to shady ebay sellers.

Ride-wise, this thing flies and is simply a joy to ride. Perfect power, great engine at cruising or high speed running. Balanced, exact handling.

However, given the choice of getting this or a newer bike, I'd get the newer bike simply because of having the parts available. Of course, the "hunt" for parts is always pretty fun and exciting if things go your way, but wait till you're looking for that one part that nobody has and your bike sits and deteriorates. And imagine doing the hunt from asia! Thank goodness this bike's almost bullet-proof.

Yeah, having already spent the $ on the '87 I must lay in the bed that I made.:) I'm SURE there were wiser choices, but this is the one I chose. It should be fun, and with sites like this with all the awesome help and info, hopefully all will be golden(or in my case pearl white)
    thanks

Pearl white? Basically the same model as mine (86) since they only made changes in 1988. Again, they definitely made something special when they first came out with this model if, until today, we're all still enamored by it.
