If you own a 1991 VFR we could really use your help. My husband is helping our neighbor with his. We own 2 5th Gens & 1 6th Gen.

My husband could really use a discussion with a 1991 owner....please call 623.810.3243 - if you are willing to share some info.

    Thanks!

It runs fabulously! Here's the issue. Yesterday, the plugs & oil were changed. The carbs were filthy so they were cleaned.

After sitting all night, outside, it started this morning with just the choke. Run it sitting still for a bit, turn it off, turn it right back on...starts no issues. Leave it sit for 1-3 minutes...then it will only start if you give it a bunch a gas...

    Odd!

Take a look at the sparkplugs, blackish??....any smoke from exhaust??

Bikes don't enjoy long idling periods and warm up best when ridden.; if it's running, ride it, and after it's warmed up, ride it hard.

    Then check again.

When you say "giving it lots of gas" I assume you mean, "lots of throttle." If you have to twist the throttle wide open to get it to start back up, that would indicate that it's flooding out. Turning the throttle wide open when the engine is at cranking RPM lowers the vacuum inside the carb body and allows more fresh air into the engine and less fuel. Once the overflow of fuel is purged thru the engine by lots of cranking, it will suddenly start firing. The carbs may be overflowing fuel down into the intake. This can be caused by the needle/seat valves in one or several carbs not seating properly or improper float adjustment. To literally give a carburated engine "lots of gas" would mean turning the choke back on or pouring fuel down the intake.

    Good Luck!

Yes, I meant a lot of throttle.

Problem seems to be solved. He cleaned the carbs again AND put the "soup can" evac canister (Cali only) back on. Doesn't make sense that the can would have anything to do with it (we have taken it off every VFR we've ever owned without incident)....all we know is it starts now fine in all situations. PHEW! THANKS!
