I actually took about 100 pictures of these four little dudes.. I started out about 20 feet away from them and gradually moved within about six feet before they got nervous. It was cool watching them keep their eyes on the two dogs that were playing right around them they would watch the dogs and not even eye ball me , But if I moved they knew it was pretty cool photgraphing thes little buggers..

My younger brother's wacked-out wife works for a Vet and their home looks like the Island of Dr. Moreau; She's always bringing home messed-up and/or abandoned animals. She currently has, ahem, a one-eyed cat, a paraplegic cat that drags itself around by its 2 front legs, 2 very very mean south American parrots (one that attacks my brother at every opportunity), a rabbit, a 3-legged dog, one normal dog, and yes, a rescued parent-less squirell. She lets most of them run free around the house and of all of them the one that no one messes with is the older, german-speaking ( thanks to a former owner) Parrot; even the cats and dogs won't get near it- one mean, mean bird...

Squirrelman got me interested in my backyard denizens comprised of Grey Squirrels, Ground Squirrels, Chipmunks, and a resident Ground Hog. I now keep an eye out for their welfare and enjoy their antics. Although I live in a 66-home housing development with only a one acre lot per home, we also have deer, fox, raccoons, and opossums wandering through our property regularly. The deer lie down and rest up in our back yard. Lots of varied and beautiful birds, also. All are welcome and appreciated, even though they can present a hazard when out riding. Wouldn't have it any other way, though!

It's obviously her passion. I admire passionate and compassionate people. You're lucky to have her in your family!

    THANKS, Crusty !!

Those are nice shots and show that those 4 fellows are different from our east coast grey ( Sciurus Carolinensis) squirrels in both appearance and behavior because sitting that close together would not be normal for greys, which keep a cautious territorial distance between them.

Do they nest in trees, cuz they look to me like California ground squirrels (Spermophilus beecheyi).

They're much heavier built than eastern greys, and could definitely beat them up.

It's one of my hopes to get folks interested in protecting and appreciating generally ignored or harassed back yard visitors, not just for their entertainment value but as a bit of the total ecological balance. Glad i had any influence on Knife and others. I've been wanting to learn alot about ground hogs ( they're a species of squirrel !) but they are VERY shy.

Anyone without a backyard can sometimes watch squirrels ( and racoons) here : http://www.squirrelcam.com/

they are the ground squirrels...this particular bunch lives inside a bush.and they are eating Iceplant which has no nutritional value other than water, these guys I am sure are fed for stuffs from the picinicers and students that hang out in the park. They run crazy all over campus and the ardeners hate them cause they rut up the grass and cause cave ins.

Squirrelman I had a big ass groundhog living in the drainage creek at the back of my yard. He has apparently moved on I haven't seen him yet this year but maybe they hibernate or something. This is the animal that made the dogs go apeshit and was so big I thought for a minute that maybe Pedrosa was hanging out in my backyard. Then someone told me no, if that were really him your fences would all be knocked down from him crashing into them

Groundhogs, if you could ever get close enough to see, have the most delicate and beautiful front hands you could imagine, like a baby !! As awsome and as jaw-droppingly perfect as a teenage girl's elegant pudendum.

And squirrels have totally amazing rear feet !!

I am glad to see that there is finally an iceplant that has no nutritional value. IMO it's about time.
