I was just wonderiing how far some of yall ride on your first gens. I was planning a pretty decent trip this summer but I keep getting slack from some people here at home about how trustworthy it is.

I put 27 k on my first one but that was 24 years ago.Rode it over several states back then but would never take my gen 2 past where my truck can carry it home . They are old bikes and even simple parts can be a problem.

I was really hoping you weren't going to say that. I wanted to ride up to the blue ridge parkway or that general area but i don't want to have worry about my bike for the whole week oh well

Do not let me ruin your good time, if you trust your bike go for it! It is what good times are made of.

I may just do that and let my mechanic look it over real good before i go. I would like to get a new bike to use for a daily rider but I just don't have the funds right now or before the summer gets here.

you should get AAA RV/motorcycle towing and bump the hundred mile radius up... I have ridden my gen two roughly 400 miles in a day and all was good.just like you said have your mechanic go over it for you..and if you trust it..go for it......(like TOE said)

I ride my bike almost everyday and then go for some decent rides on the weekends that are usuially under 300 miles round trip, I kieep the maintance up on it and i have to admit i do trust it. The AAA option is a good idea that I haven't thought about that that would be some great piece of mind.

If it's mechanically ok what can go wrong? Any bike can have problems. My 1st gen has always gotten me thru with very very little to no problems on all my trips. Hey it's a Honda man.

My last three trips, one each year, I've ridden at least 1500 miles to around 2800 per trip. Zero problems. Though I do take a good compliment of tools with me all the time just encase. Biggest thing I'm concerned about is crashing/falling over repairs. That's happened. My steed has 58k+ miles on it too. It is well maintained by the best mechanic I know, me!

Highest mile trips were 3800-4200 miles and 1000 miles in 18 hours. I got a plaque for that one. I say go for it. They are great bikes still. Then there's this year trip to ??? No worries mon.

I haven't decided yet my orgigal plan was nixed by my boss when he said i had to pick a new week for my vactiion. That is one of the reasons i was asking. The Blue Ridge Parkway is on my list of possible destinations and maybe the Uwharrie National Forest. Rod told me about that onel. \

I envy your abilty to work on your own bike I am totally not mechanicly inclined It would sure save me a lot of money. lol`

Last summer I took my 1986 VF500 on a trip to the east coast. From Brampton, Ontario Canada through the states heading east up around Cape Breton then back home. 4,800+ kms

I did some math and it was the Equivalant from riding through America Coast to Coast.

See link for the post trip report and there's a link in there about my pre-trip planning.

I rode my 1000 back and forth across the US several times in one year back in the early 90s. Never had a problem.

I didn't thinik that i really had to much to worry about since if I have my calculations right I won't be going over 1500 miles in the week of my vaction. I keep up with my maintnace so eveything should be fine.

I ride mine all over. Usally 200 to 350 mile day trips. All the bikes I ride with are a lot newer and they seem to be the one having problems. I worry more about tire failure than breaking down. Ride it, if it breaks fix it.

Great information guys! It sounds like many around here aren't afraid to go anywhere on them! Once I get my valve situation ironed out, I'll have lots of confidence in mine. By the end of last year, the only thing keeping me from going very far at one time was the timing chain noise, and the valve tap. Since I found the source of the valve tapping in the process of changing the timing chain tensioner, all should be good to go!

I rode my '85 from New Mexico to Alabama in 1985 then (after 3 years of sitting and one carb rebuild) from Alabama to Oklahoma. IMO, the bike was very nice on both hauls but there have been cam oiling issues with the Gen1s you may wanna deal with before the trip...
